Probably a mixture of both. But, mostly, I favor acquiring good all-around players that are versatile.

San Antonio, Detroit, and particularly Dallas are good examples of that.

I don't think it's as cut and dry as the poll states.

Our Team that won two Championships was a team of individual specialists that were welded into a team that could play the all round team game.
Just having well rounded players leads to mediocrity, a great team must have great individuals that are outstanding in their specialist position eg: Yao Ming and Tracy Mc Grady. it takes a great coach to weld these parts into the team game, and thats what Basketball is all about- the team game.

I think you are mixing up talent with talent level. Well-rounded does not have to mean mediocre. For example. Yao and Tracy can do a little bit of everything. We are fortunate to have them with such a high, well-rounded talent level.

I guess this thread is precipitated by all of the pre-draft talk-- specifically Brandon Roy vs. JJ Redick-- Roy with all-around skills and Redick with one particularly strong one (shooting) that we need.

I"m in favor of well-rounded players any of whom can take it to you at any time. Of course, some will dominate (i.e. Yao and T-Mac) but it's nice to have a floor full of well-rounded players.

How much difference would a healthy Sura have made this year?

Would you rather have a PF with a 4 PT, 9 RB, and 2 BLK statline or one with 12 PT, 7 RB , 1 BLK and 2 ASST statline (who can put the ball on the floor)... or something like that? :D

A Commander in Chief [JVG, CD ] planning his forces [Rockets]
plans to win the war [NBA Champiopnship]
develops his specialists [Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy and Peace Keepers]
each to be coordinated to do their part in the battle, each will overlap a little
but gaps will be filled in by other lesser specialists such as NASA, FBI CIA and AWACK [the bench].
All Round Players are not all round players if thay have an outstanding quality. They are therefor specialists if their outstanding quality is what is
developed and used by the coach.

one-dimensional specialists are too easily shut down. you need a versitile team.
