Note: This may be D&D material, but it's interesting to know about. Seems like more than a coincidence.

The first two affected India, Pakistan, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The third one is between the UAE and Oman. The fourth one connected Qatar and the UAE. This one may not have been cut, but taken offline due to power issues.

The first three have been blamed on ships' anchors, but there is some dispute about that. And that's two in the Mediterranean and two in the Persian Gulf.

There have been no official reports of malice to me, but it's an awfully big coincidence. The fact that Iran has lost Internet connectivity only makes this weirder.

EDITED TO ADD (2/5): The International Herald Tribune has more. And a comment below questions whether Iran being offline has anything to do with this.

EDITED TO ADD (2/5): A fifth cut? What the hell is going on out there?

I read an article last night speculating on this. They also mentioned one counterpoint: approximately 50 times a year undersea cables are cut and repaired each year. The suspicious part is that these cables have been cut near a major bottleneck. I'm interested to hear from experts if this is really a coincidence or not.

Its the Scientologists. They think Anonymous lives somewhere in the Middle East but are not sure where so they are systematically taking them all off. They ain't havin' no more youtube rumors on the Interwebs.

LOL, I do know that they had an actual ship at one time - so who knows?

I remember when L. Ron Hubbard's ship was scrapped at the Port of Brownsville in the 80's. All the stuff was auctioned off, and my father-in-law (who worked at the port) bought a cool hand carved table and gave it to my wife. We still have it to this day.

I've always wondered if it would be worth anything to Tom Cruise...

That was my initial reaction. Basic tactics is to cut lines of communication. But all of this might just be viral marketing for the next Cloverfield movie. I might even work for J.J. Abrams. You never know.

It is a tactic of war, and good to know that they can be isolated, let's see who has the most powerful navy in the world?

JJ Abrams is a master marketer and it wouldn't surprise me that he would cut several fiber optic cables to promote Cloverfield 2: Clover does Beirut
