Marc Gasol was almost a Rocket at one point and I'm having trouble deciding who the Rockets would be better off with at this point. Omer Asik is doing great this season. He is beasting on the boards like no one could have imagined. He isn't the shot blocker some of us wanted, but he plays great defense and changes a lot of shots. While Gasol is making $14-$16 million over the next three seasons, Asik is locked up at a cap hit of $8.3 million per year. That gives the Rockets an additional $5.6 million in cap space to use during free agency and $6.5 million in the off-season after that. I know Marc is the better player, but do you think he's worth giving up that additional cap space over the next two years?

It seems like an easy question, but giving up the ability to sign a max contract seems like a lot for a 28 year old center who doesn't grab 8 rebounds per game. I thought Gasol would be great for the Rockets and I knew the Grizz would match, but I think it worked out great considering our cap flexibility.

Marc Gasol. Just because he can dominate down low not only defensively but offensively. We need good post players if we want more success in the playoffs. I think Gasol is worth the price as a very good big 2-way players are very hard to come by these days.

Why do you think they matched?

Asik makes almost half of what Gasol makes. That gives the Rockets the ability to sign Josh Smith (an excellent shot blocker) to pair with Asik. They're both locked up for three seasons, but Asik is is younger and has room to improve. It's Asik's first season as a starter and he's already grabbing 11.1 rebounds in 30 minutes per game, while Gasol can only manage 7.7 rebounds in 35.3 minutes per game.

I guess the question is which do you prefer: Josh Smith and Omer Asik or Marc Gasol and a mid-level type player like JJ Redick?

Gasol is legit DPOY candidate and the best center this season.

If your goal is to convince us to side with Asik, you might want to include a player that doesn't mire us in the mediocrity that Atlanta has long enjoyed.

Even if you double gasol salary, I would still make the trade.

My goal is to get a gauge of what the Rockets having the ability to sign a max player is worth. I think the Rockets are better off with a max free agent and Asik than they are with Marc Gasol and a backup for Harden or an old Pau Gasol after getting amnestied.

    Marc Gasol
    Robinson
    Parsons
    Harden
    Lin

Our window would be 3 years (Gasol would be 31 by then and centers age faster than guards). I don't see the Rockets winning with that roster considering Miami and OKC are still in the NBA.

I would rather have Gasol + mle over Asik + CHANCE at a really good FA.

There is a huge difference between having the cap space to sign a player, and actually having signed the player.

Personally I think that a starting line-up of Gasol, Robinson, Parsons, Harden, Lin can be defensively and offensively excellent. Probably could grab home court next year. Would improve every season as it would still be a very young team, and one that could afford to pay Parsons.

I also think Gasol's game does not require athleticism so he could be a starter till his mid 30's. Really the only thing he could do better is grab 1 more rebound in those minutes, and I think Robinson is a good enough rebounder to offset that anyway.

Gasol is much better but I do like Asik. Both are good in their own ways. Asik can still improve though.

Gasol (Marc) is my favorite center in the NBA right now.

This is absurd! The OP said considering salaries! You don't pay $15M for a center unless he is a dominant one. $ for $ Asik gives you comparable points and rebounds.

Gasol is averaging 14.5 ppg and 7.7 rpg. His salary for 2013 is $15,829,688. By my math, you are paying $1.092 M per point and $2.06M per rebound.

Asik is averaging 10.1 ppg and 11.6rpg. His salary for 2013 is $8,374,646. By my math, you are paying $829K per point and $722K per rebound.

So this is my rational, scientific argument for Asik. I won't even do a comparison on Bynum's production:salary this year since you would be paying $16 for nothing. When comparing players, you have to wiegh production against the salary cap. Its not as easy as saying you'd rather have Lebron and Durant instead of Harden and Parsons. Of course we would! But since this isn't XBox, and we can't turn off the salary cap, we have to budget. Just like we do at home. I'd love to drive an E-Class, and I could probably afford it, but I'd have to live in an apartment. So I drive an SUV, and live in a house.

7.7 rebounds for a center is pretty pathetic.

    That's Kyle Lowry territory.

Oops! I used Gasol's 2015 salary. Sorry guys. His 2013 salary is only $13M but the math is still in favor of Asik

This leads right into another, more immediate question: Pau or Omer?
