About a week ago, My cable receiver suddenly stopped working (Uverse). They determined my ethernet wall jack stopped working (didnt even know this could happen) because when I plugged the receiver upstairs into a separate wall jack, the cable receiver started working fine.

I am trying to fix my wall jack now and have bought the tool set from radio shack with a new rj-45 connector.

I have found multiple guides and youtube videos, and have tried them several times, but I am still not getting internet from that connection no matter which device i check with (computer, router, att receiver etc).

Has anyone tried this before? Do you know if it is an absolute must to trim the colored wires after you have inserted them into the respective 8 slots before you test the connection with a device?

Are you sure it's the jack and not the cable itself?

I guess I am not, but do cables go bad that randomly? If so, I have to get it rewired from wherever its connecting to upstairs and I have no experience in doing that. Maybe I am in over my head...

oh and if you are asking about the cat 5 cable running from the wall to the device, yes. I am sure that cable is working because when I use the same cable upstairs, it works fine.
