The House of Representatives passed a bill today to require minimum sound levels to be emitted from quiet electric and hybrid vehicles, in order to help warn blind pedestrians. Last week the same measure unanimously cleared the Senate. It is the first piece of legislation pertaining to auto safety passed under President Obama.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the chief sponsor of the bill and a hybrid owner, said it “will allow us to continue to promote our energy independence and technological innovation while safeguarding those who use senses other than sight to navigate the roads.”

Under the bill, the NHTSA will be required to establish requirements for an alert sound that will allow blind pedestrians to reasonably detect a nearby hybrid or electric vehicle operating at low speeds. The legislation is fully supported by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers.

Currently, the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are equipped with mechanisms that alert pedestrians, though it was not required of them.

I am appalled. Just like banning cigarettes in public buildings, this is just another example of the big brother nanny state depriving us of our constitutional right to exercise our personal responsibility to be free to choose to go deaf or get lung cancer if we choose to.. It also deprives the blind of the character building aspects of keeing their sense of hearing very very acute.

Hey I think I am getting the hang of this libertarian stuff. I am thinking of building a data base to generate libertarian bot speak. Can anyone help me out with the few dozen or so other code words or phrases that seem to encapsulate the movement for the vast majority of the adherents?

Damn, and I was really counting on the stealthiness of my electric car to allow me to sneak up on unsuspecting blind people and then honk my horn.

All the street racing kids will find a way to mod the car so that it's silent again. This tyranny will not stand.

Thank you rtsy for finding all of the REALLY IMPORTANT issues to worry about. I can now see why it's so important to take back the country. Making cars slightly noisier to alert unsuspecting pedestrians to make people safer would have never happened under Bush.

This on top of one neighborhood creating opportunities for healthier food is just too much for a real American to take.

These issues are the ones that everybody is talking about around the water cooler. Rise up America. Don't let Big Brother provide opportunities for healthier food, and make it safer for pedestrians.

    Fight the Power!

Please rtsy, rush over to the the other thread and voice your concern over the great peril that Christian Bankers are facing.

No smoking bans are worse, since liberals still don't understand the difference between public and private business. It's just really strange that we cant have silent vehicles due to of such a small minority of handicapped people. Noise pollution primarily comes from vehicles and it can cause annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful effects. But the nanny state claims it is essential for our safety. Money also must be appropriated for its enduring existence.

This sounds fishy to me. Is it lowering standard so the big three can keep churning out noisy cars?

It's too late for Dwight Schrute, though. :(

Pretend I could find a clip of "The Office" where Andy uses his Prius in electric-only mode to pin Dwight between it and the parking lot fence. (Episode 5.11, "The Duel".)
