Congratulations to mighty North Korea on a successful launch of a communications satellite now beaming important information back to the motherland from the Pacific ocean.

    North Korea launches long-range rocket

North Korea today defied mounting international pressure when it launched a long-range rocket, with the move triggering an emergency meeting of the UN security council.

The state's official news agency said it had successfully put a satellite into orbit and said the satellite was transmitting revolutionary songs as it circled the Earth.

However, South Korea later denied the claim and said the payload had dropped into the ocean.

NORAD is confirming that the payload is in the bath. Whoops.

What does it mean for world security now that NK soldiers no longer have to carry their warheads to the intended target ?

My comrades and I launched a successful missle/rocket once, like 14 years ago, and we weren't surrounded by this much controversy.

=( I miss Industrial tech class at spring branch middle school. From what i can see in the video, the rocket needed a little more plastic cement and white glue.....but that's just me.

If you think this is about revolutionary songs, you are underestimating North Koreans.

What are you going to do about it?

The same rocket could be used to transport nuclear weapons to Japan, and they could expand the range to the United States, but that's all. No big deal.

But that's not what the rocket is for, is it? They're a soveriegn nation so I still don't understand why such a big deal was made about this. Unless you're saying that only some countries should be allowed to develop this kind of technology while others should not have that right. To me that's an colonialist/imperialist outlook towards the world.

The only problem I have with this whole thing is that a country that isnt able to feed all of its people really should not be launching satellites into space or wherever they're attempting to launch these things. How about investing more in things like sustainable farming and what not before you start doing crazy space launches. I guess they do face a threat to their sovereignty from the United States but obviously that is justified looking at how their allocation of resources is completely messed up...just my 0.02...

It's a big deal because countless times the North Koreans said they would get rid of their nuclear weapons program, but this rocket is a step in the wrong direction if they want to prove that. I guess it would not be a big deal if they were trying a different type of rocket to send a low level satellite.

The 'satellite launch vehicle' was built from one of North Korea's ballistic missiles with a stage added. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. If you want to get into an ontological argument about what 'is' means, that is fine, but it falls outside the scope of the tangible, real world where this launch took place.

There are specific UN Security Council Resolutions that prevent North Korea from pursuing this 'satelite launch' as a result of their nuclear weapons test.

Racial slurs in German are still racial slurs and they make you look like an idiot in any language.
