Found this interesting article from Yang Yi on sina.com. Like to share this with you guys. It is not a line-by-line and word-by-word translation like those by Heech. But I hope you will find this informative. http://2004.sina.com.cn/cn/bk/2004-07-30/45248.html 1. This is about a lunch meeting between Yao Ming and Colin Pine this past Wednesday (July 21) at noon time in Beijing. 2. Colin just arrived Tuesday night from Shanghai (Note: He met Steve Francis there Monday night as they stayed at the same hotel, Shanghai Portman). Colin is no longer Yao Ming's interpreter, but an employee of NBA Asia. He will leave Beijing for New York on Thursday to handle some personal matters and return to Beijing on Sunday. Yao Ming will depart for Europe Thursday (Note: FIBA 2nd Diamond Ball Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro July 31 ~ August 3, then Lithuania, then Athens for Olympic). So this is the only time slot for their meeting. 3. It has been 3 months since they last saw each other; Colin thought Yao Ming will not require an interpreter in the new season. So he took the initative to contact NBA, to look for an opportunity to work in China. However, Yao Ming now requests Colin to return and work for him for at least another season. JVG also requests for it. So Colin decides to return to Houston in September and continue serving Yao Ming for another season (year) before taking up his new post in Beijing. Colin felt much satisfaction as he got himself into this new job at NBA Asia on his own. 4. Yao Ming let Colin have his salmon instead of the pork chop rice he ordered. Yao Ming said: "I heard that JVG is very excited about the new roster of players for the new season, and his hair is starting to grow. Is that true ?" Colin replied: "Even if it is true, once the new season starts, his hair will start to fall again." Both laughed heartily. 5. As the national team is leaving for Europe/the Olympic and will not return until early September, Colin said he would feel lonely. He had been to Chengdu and Shanghai 2 years ago, but this is his first time visit of Beijing. He told Yao Ming: " I have not got a girl friend yet. I would like to find accompany here. Maybe play basketball together 3 vs 3. When you're back, then you can take me around." Yao Ming replied: "When I come back, let's climb the Great Wall together" 6. Colin picked up a can of Coca Cola to drink; he like to drink Coke. When he had done with it, Yao Ming pushed the Coke can to the far corner of the table. Colin told Yao Ming: "I have never seen you play in the national team. This time I'll watch you play in the Olympic live from TV". Yao Ming nodded and grimaced.
Good, I read it too. Good for him. He will be back to company Yao for one more year. 2nd thought. I am seriously jealous of Pine. Lucky b*stard.
I'm glad he's able to continue to work with Yao at his own request. I think a lot of Yao gaining success in English so quickly could be credited to Colin Pine. The improvement of Yao's English since his rookie year and now is like night and day.
Tell you what, I have a friend of mine at school here. He spent two years in Taiwan (on a Mormon mission) and speaks very good Chinese. The Rockets contacted him about this translation job for Yao Ming just before he got here. He said they really wanted a Mormon guy who are generally honest and hard working people(Sorry to mix religion into this, but just to give you a background, and please leave unkind remarks toward any religion outside of this thread). My friend turned it down (I am not sure if there was an offer on the table, so he might have turned it down before anything happened), because he was getting married and he doesn't want to travel with the team around and leave his wife behind. He said he would be interested if he's single though.
Dude, ah, it's going to kill me if I dont let it out. Millions applogies to Momon folks in advance. I am an atheist, so ... Oaky..., Thank god, Yao wasnt messed up. Imagine, Yao and bunch of wifes retreat to the desert of new mexico. Holy ... Sorry man and your friend. JK.
OK, next time, just let it kill you and don't let it out. I thought this kind of remarks won't come up if I warned people in advance. When people share a story like this, they expect kindness in return... Sigh...
I think I remember someone said it was in the neighborhood of 40-50K. Not bad jack for an interpreter, when you add the cost of season tickets on the bench to the salary . Plus, you know Yao gets him chicks all the time. The salary is nothing compared to the resume padding this guy is getting. Colin is pretty young, and he's seen alot and performed under great pressure. He'll do well for NBA Asia.
The dude is set for life. He's the first guy in a brand new market that is just about to explode. It's what you call good timing and good fortune. And then if someone tries to screw him over, hey, you ever met my friend Yao, he's one of the twenty most powerful and popular people in China.
Colin's feeble attempt to get Yao to hire him a prostitute. Yao, misinterpreting the implication, makes a thinly veiled double-entendre come-on.
this kid has lots of self respect. does he really, sincerely, without reservation, believe that he landed that job in nba asian 'by himself'? without the help of yao?
Colin seems to have a geniue obsession towards chinese girls. is it because of his diminutive statue? he always looks like a little boy to me.
Is Yao still upset with Coca Cola? I seem to remember that he sued the company for something or other.... What was the outcome?
