Congratulations to our troops and their leaders on SURGING ahead in Iraq. Kudos to the American people for seeing through politically motivated propaganda on the left that suggests that our troops are not winning this war. Country first, politics second.

Confidence in War on Terror and Iraq at Highest Level Ever
Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Email to a FriendAdvertisement
Voter confidence in the War on Terror is at the highest level ever recorded since Rasmussen Reports began regular tracking in January 2004. Fifty-four percent (54%) of American voters now think the United States and its allies are winning the war. The previous high-water mark for optimism--52%--was reached a handful of times in September and October 2004.

Optimism about the situation in Iraq is also at an all-time high. Forty-eight percent (48%) now expect the situation in that troubled country to get better over the next six months. Only 17% expect things to get worse. In addition to being the most optimistic assessment ever recorded, these numbers reflect a remarkable turnaround over the past year. Last August, just 27% thought things were going to get better while 47% were pessimistic.

Looking longer term, voters are evenly divided as to whether history will judge the mission in Iraq as a success or failure. Thirty-eight percent (38%) offer an optimistic assessment while 41% say the opposite. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Republicans think history will look kindly on the effort in Iraq while 63% of Democrats disagree. Unaffiliated voters are divided on the question.

These numbers also reflect an amazing turnaround over the past year. In August a year ago, 57% thought history would judge the U.S. mission in Iraq to be a failure. At that time, just 29% thought it would be viewed a success.

President Bush isn’t getting any credit from the changing political environment. Just 30% rate President George W. Bush’s handling of the situation in Iraq as good or excellent while 47% say he has been doing a poor job.

Voters remain divided on whether or not the country is safer today than it was before September 11, 2001. While 41% of voters believe it is safer today, 40% disagree.

As always, there are substantial gender and partisan differences on all questions dealing with Iraq and the War on Terror.

While 46% of women say the U.S. is winning the war, 62% of men agree. Nearly a quarter of women (24%) think the terrorists are winning, while just 14% of men agree.

On a partisan basis, 82% of Republican voters say America is winning the War on Terror, just 34% of Democrats agree.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of unaffiliated voters say the U.S. and its allies are winning.

It's just shocking how the news media and many ignorant drones out there think that the war on terror is a failure. I guess when politicians moan and groan to stir up the populous, too many people simply believe them, without taking the time to fact check.

Congrats are in order to the troops, for another job well done

That's excellent! That probably means what we've been doing has been working. If terrorism was high on your list of concerns that would mean that the US hadn't been doing a very good job of keeping it in control.

No, it just means terrorism in the US was the Bush's trump card that was played over and over and over again. Eventually people quit caring if you change the color of a terror alert.

How many terrorist attacks on US soil since 1980?

Well, if the answer is not "zero" (which it isn't), then I'd say any number is too many.

    What was your point?

And what's with the rejection of any shred of positive news around here?

Is it just because y'all hate T_J? Conservatives? Republicans?

Seriously having a hard time grasping why a good news story is so hated in here lately.

If you hear any ounce of news that is positive, do you guys just hackle up like a startled cat in real life?

Just wondering... Would it be better for the country as a whole if the news only got worse?

Just to finish any sort of debate (past or future) as to whether this BBS is a disgusting infestation of liberal filth, look at how little attention GOOD news in Iraq receives. Were this a thread about increased casualties in Iraq, we might have a new record for views/replies...

^ If it were a thread about you taking the bet - the record for views would be obliterated. But you won't do that, will you?

PS I am so glad that I came up with this bet idea. It has really put a damper on your usual routine.

I don't even know what the mission in Iraq is anymore other than finding the right way to leave.

depends on what your priorities are i suppose, whether good news for the country could be perceived as bad news for one party's political prospects.

there's a word for people who think that way.

Even supporters don't know anymore - the new en vogue cliche is "finish what we started". Nice and nebulous.

If I were to believe the White House, we still have a Significant Risk of terrorist attack on US soil and a High Risk of terrorist attack if on an airplane.

So, yes... I am happy people are no longer accepting Bush's lies.

    /partyatmyhouse

After 8 years of lies and distortions it is a little hard to accept anything about the White House's vaunted war on terror. Bravo to the people.

I think this is the type of attitude which makes the "war on terror" such a problem.

If we spend billions and billions of dollars preventing terrorist attacks, only to have children go impoverished, elderly suffer due lack of Social security, workers lose their jobs from stagnant economy... I"m not exactly sure I'm happy about "zero terrorist attacks".

The US government doesn't exactly have infinite amount of money to deal with every single problem in the country.
