    I have a computer virus on my computer. I got it from my space. I have NOD anti-virus but it didn't catch it. I now can't access task manager and it keeps sending me to some anti-virus website(obviously the ones who made the virus). Well computer is not working right. Is there a anti-virus I can load (free) that could clear this up for me or do I need to start from scratch?
    thanks

    Sure it's a virus and not spyware/adware? Is it from Driver Cleaner?

    If adaware or spybot doesn't fix it (both are free), try AVG free anti-virus. It picked up 3 or 4 small viruses on my computer that McAfee failed to locate

    Just to make things clear, I don't think the virus is on your CPU. The CPU is your prossessor, such as Pentium 4 1.6 ghz. Nothing ever gets on the processor. Although they sometimes affect the functions of your CPU, viruses are always located somewhere in your harddrive. Worse case scenario, you'll have to reformat the HD, but it won't do damage to your whole computer.

    Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

    * Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
    * By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    * Click on Install.
    * It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    * Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    * Click on the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile' button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    * Save the log to a convenient location as you'll need to post it soon.
    * Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
    * Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    copy paste the log from notepad.
    do you have a firewall?

    I will have to do this when I get home. I am at work now and I guess it could be spyware but I ran my spybot and came up w/ a few things but didn't fix it. My brother looked at it and said there were allot of programs that were locked and could be scan by the spybot (showing on log).

    ok im not an expert on this but i think i can help you some.

    this one is real bad ---> C:\WINNT\system32\lpcywinp.exe
    read here
    if you can locate that file using windows explorer delete it. (probably wont be able to delete it but may get lucky)

    Show hidden files
    How to make files and folders visible:
    Click Start > Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
    Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
    Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
    You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    Download ATF Cleaner© to your desktop.
    This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!

    Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main select the following:

    * Windows Temp
    * Current User Temp
    * All Users Temp
    * Temporary Internet Files
    * Prefetch
    * Java Cache

    *The other boxes are optional*
    Then click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox:

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    * NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    If you use Opera:

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    * NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    here are some scans to try. if they don't fix your problem then might be able to delete it with Hijackthis... but try these first.

    AVG download

    Ad-Aware download
    Installing Ad-Aware 2007

    * Double-click aaw2007.exe to start the installation
    * Click Next
    * Select I accept the license agreement, then Next
    * Enter Full Name and Organization, or leave blank
    * Select Anyone who uses this computer, then Next
    * Select Standard Installation and click Next
    * Click Next, and Next again
    * Click Finish and Ad-Aware 2007 will open.

    The first time you run Ad-Aware 2007, you will be asked for a serial number. Simply press Cancel and continue with the instructions.

    try vundofix even though it may not find anything.

    if they dont work you will have to ask someone else on a forum that knows more than me. i can give ya links.

    Also try out another Spyware/Trojan/Malware tracker. It's called SUPER Antispyware.

    http://www.superantispyware.com/?tag=GOOGLE-SUPERANTISPYWARE

    It found various versions of the Vundo virus that Spybot, AdAware, my McAfee Anti-Virus couldn't detect.

    Also try this online virus scanner.

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    Panda will detect it, but won't necessarily remove the viruses unless you buy their package. At least you'll know where the root of your problems are.

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/

    Scroll to the bottom where it mentions free online virus scanner.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/

    That forum I linked above has people who specialize in the removal of hard to remove trojans, and viruses that aren't initially detected.

    You'll need the latest version of HiJackThis as you've already posted the log. They'll ask you to rename the application to something like Angel.exe since some viruses are nifty enough to make their program applications invisible under the name HiJackThis.exe. Thus the name change of the program.

    One of the guys in the forum will help you step by step, but be weary that they may not be able to instruct you possibly every other day. It's free computer help though, and they will definitely help you get the job done. Just expect to possibly take a week or more to fully remove it since you won't get immediate step by step responses right after you reply.

    And lastly if worst comes to worse, do a System Restore to the latest date you can recall not having any virus problems at all. And if any of the stuff I linked above doesn't work, then you may have to consider a format, but thats a last resort.

    EDIT: If you go to the bleepingcomputer link, make sure you go to their forum and scroll down to Security, follow the instructions on the board, and post your HJT log.

    http://www.pcpitstop.com/freescan/ <- this here is a FREE online virus scanner. You must download a ~4 MB file to scan your PC online. :cool:

    Take a look at the rest of the online scan tools on the left side. Doubting if it's a real site? At this point, you shouldn't worry about that; it's too late for that.

    If I were you, I wouldn't be installing anything or letting other people log on to your PC. Disconnect your machine from the InterWebs as soon as the scan starts.

    #1 rule of free sites like myspace.com and such is to say NO anytime they ask you a question. :eek:

    That's usually not an easy trojan to get rid of. Go to one of the forums on this page and ask for help. Many of them will have you post your HijackThis output and guide you through its removal (as well as any other junk they may see in the log) : http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.php
