Anybody have any idea what could be wrong??? My sound on my computer used to work just fine. Now what it has a problem. There is no sound coming out, but the weird thing is if you turn the speakers all the way up then you can hear it very muffeled & very low, sounds like it is in the background. Any ideas????

Did you try the mute button? It happened to me before and I felt really dumb. It was the same thing, no sound but if I turned it up all the way I could barely hear it.

I have a similar problem, IBM thinkpad R50, I had a bad hard drive, so I replaced it, then reloaded XP, now I have no sound. It seems this is quite common problem.

I'm assuming I need to download some kind of sound device stuff specific to thinkpad...where can I find the downloads I need?

Is the power to the speakers plugged in well?

Im assuming you alredy checked your connections and everything. So double click on the sound icon just make sure nothing is muted there or like your WAV sound volume isn't turned all the way down. Cause you could have your Master all the way up and the Wav down and be hearing it really low.

You can get them from IBM's website in the Support section for the specific laptop you have.

Double click the speaker in the task bar and make sure that the "Wave" slider is turned up as well as the "Master Volume."

Yeah connections look ok & the sound is all the way up on both the master & wave. Most of the sound comes out of the base box (the low muffeled music).

Damn this thing, I can't figure out what it could be.

It might be the wires going bad from the sub to the actual speakers. My speakers are really old and i have to mess with the wires sometimes cause like 1 speaker will go out and them come back on until i get them both working with the sub. i just haven't bought any new ones or anything. Play with the wires while the sound is up and see what happens.

One thiny ou wanna try for sure is this. Get a pair of headphones and plug them in to where your speakers are right now. See if you get sound coming to the headphones.

If you do then you have ap roblem with your speakers. If you get no sound in your headphones you know it's narrowed down to the sound car and either a hardware or software problem and we can go on from there.

Also make sure you try out the headphone plug on sound card as well after you have tried plugging it in to where your speakers are plugged in.

Cranking up the volume to the speakers only allows you to listen to the "power" as it is coming into the speakers, but it is not actually anything from the PC. Or is it? Play a particular tune in your media player, see if you can make the lyrics out. Prove me wrong, will you, please?

    Try these:
    • Is this at work? Plug IN speakers you can borrow from someone else and try them.
    • Check all programs that can change the MASTER volume. These include Winamp, Quicktime, RealOne, Windows Media Player, etc.
    • Insert a CD. Use the speakers you know are working fine to plug them into the front jack where the CD player allows you to listen.

From there you can deduct whether it's a setting, your card, the sound, a program, or someone is playing a nasty joke on you. Personally, if you can still read messages on this BBS, I consider it being lucky. Now, if we still had that intro with GENE-O at the splash page of this site... that would be a different story.

EDIT: I just noticed you posted this late at night. Is that at home or at work (different time zone)?
