I use Windows XP as the platform and DSL to go online. I have no problem to get online when I log in as the main user. But when my friends want to use my PC and log in as 'guests', they can't get online. It seems to me the PC cannot find the connection. I think it must have something to do with the settings of the the OS. I hope someone can help me to fix it.
are they actually logging in on the built-in "guest" account? try creating a new limited user account and see if that works. there may be limitations on what access the guest account is granted.
I created the guest account for them. And I even made it an administrator account. But everytime we try to connect to the net, a message pops out "Checking connection status. Please wait". And it just gets stuck there. Looks like I have to call MS tech support.
So you don't think it's the DSL. Wellllll, it could be something with administrative restrictions. Did you restrict a guest from changing files, moving files, etc.? Besides that I dunno. My network is still not working. Again, the internet works, but it won't send or receive files, or even recognize the other computer.
While logged on to your guest account, open up a command line and type "ipconfig /all" and see if it has the same IP addresss as it does under your account.... I doubt it would be different, but you gotta start somewhere.. after you get the results from that, look for the "default gateway" and the take that IP address and type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" insert the gateway's IP address where the x's are.. see if you get a response.. another thing to try, in IE, Under the "tools" dropdown menu, go to "Internet Options", then click the connections tab, then click the "LAN settings" button and check to make sure nothing is checked..or do this under both accounts and make sure that the settings are the same on both...it should be, but it wouldnt hurt to check.. Mooch.. do you use any IM software? after I get back from Chicago, we neeed to get together on either AIM or MSN and see if we can get it worked out..
Certainly. <--ALWAYS on AIM. Just contact Listeria Fan. Oh and I love Chicago. Haven't been there in a couple yearzzz, but it's a great city (xcept for the weather and all).
I'll be back a week from Tues. We'll get that sucker straightened out.. The weather...lol...I told the boy it was a good thing he decided to get married during the summer, wasnt no way in hell he was getting me up to Chicago during the winter...I've been a Texan for too damn long to endure below freezing temps.
I am not that good at this kind of things. Here are a few dumb questions: How and where to open up the command line while logging on? and how to find out the IP address under my account? Where to look for the "default gateway" and where to type the "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"? Thank you for your help.
All of this will be done similarly: To get the command line(the easiest way) is to do the following 1) Go to start and then run 2) A new bos will come up with run and then a blank line 3) In the blank line type cmd and press enter 4) That will bring up the old DOS looking window and should say something like C:\documents and settins\username\> 5) Next to the > type in ipconfig 6) That will list a whole lot of info. You want to check the IP Address on each account by following the above steps. 7) If they are the same that is good. You'll notice that one of the lines listed after you type the ipconfig says default gateway and lists numbers. write those down for the next step. 8) Make sure you are on the guest account then repeat steps 1-4. Next to the > type Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where the x's are the numbers you copied down from the step above. This should give you some statistics about the connection or it will show that the request has timed out. Either way that will give a starting point to solve the problem. One side note. If you created a guest account and named it guest, you may want to try creating a different account and name it something different. I found while setting up XP on a bunch of machines that there are certain things you can type in for a user name that XP defaults to certain types of accounts (one of them being "None", typing that in sets up no account in XP and lets you set it up on a network without setting up machine specific accounts). I would think setting up an account named guest would default it to guest settings, even if you give it admin rights.
I have followed your instructions step by step. I have also changed the name of the guest account to 'secondary'. Here is the result: (1) In the mainuser account, I found out my ip address is the same as the default gateway address. Is it supposed to be that way? (2) When I performed the ipconfig in the mainuser account, it gave me a lot of info under two sections. They are "Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection" and "PPP adaptor DSL connection". But when I performed the ipconfig in the guest account, there was only info under "Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection". And there was nothing under "PPP adaptor DSL connection". Therefore it didn't tell me the ip address of the guest account. So I still do not know if it's the same as the one of the mainuser account. (3) When I performed the ping in the guest account, it gave me the message 'destination unreachable'.
