I should know this or at least be able to find it but I am too lazy to actually search for it. I need, for my job, a video card connector that connects to the PC and then shows the computer on a T.V. I know you can buy a video card to do this but the problem with that is the T.V. is on a cart and we plan on using it for several different computers so buying vid cards for them all is not an option. I know there are products out there for this. What are they? Have you used any? How good are they. As for options on them I don't really care as long as it gets the job done, bells and whistles are not needed.

    Thanks,
    CK

Perhaps a projector? That may be too expensive, however if it's on the company...

Well actually we just bought 5 projectors but we are under a budget crunch and won't have funds for any more until next years budget comes out. Not to mention that I have to buy a replacemnent bulb for another projector because some moron left the damn thing on all summer and the bulb went out. That will cost my tech budget about $250. So cost is kind of an issue. I have a 32" TV available and I was looking for a cheaper alternative to use it as a 32" monitor that I could move around from room to room as needed.

Are the computers networked together? If so, all you need is one video card with S-Video output (also make sure your TV has S-Video too). You might have to keep a computer with the TV at all times, and the data transfer limits might not be enough if you plan on showing high quality presentations. If you need to make high quality presentations, you would need to download the file(s) onto the computer designated for the TV. That should do the trick...

Have you considered a Black Box? I think their product is called "VGA-Video Ultimate" or "Ultimate Plus" or something.

I had bought some a few years ago in order to route monitoring screens to ceiling mounted TVs and they worked pretty well. They even had little remote controls.

The box can connect to an ordinary VGA port and can output to SVGA or composite video. Does a bunch of other things too, but I won't go into too much detail since you seem more concerned with the video portion. They were a bit pricey (several hundred dollars new, I think) but maybe you can pick up a used one or maybe a clone model...

    Good luck...

Edit: I found a few models on Black Box's website; the Ultimate plus is almost $700  but they do have a smaller, very basic one for $250 that should do exactly what you want.

Their page doesn't link well, so go to http://www.blackbox.com Go to their online catalog and do a text search for "VGA to Video Portable II". To see the other product I told you about, search for "VGA to Video Ultimate"

We have something at my school maybe it's winTV. I dont know i'll check tomorrow but it lets you use a tv as a monitor you can either view the whole screen or zoom in on a part. It works pretty well. Not as well as a projector but my school couldnt afford to get projectors in every room either.

And how the hell do you leave a bulb on? the fan would drive me nuts if I was in the room with it.

X34 that is exactly what I am looking for. The cheaper one is probably more on the lines of what I need. nothing too fancy just something to use in a classroom so everyone in the room can see what's on the screen.

Johnny keep me posted. The thing you have at school sounds like it would work too. I don't think it is winTV though because I have that and all it does is let me show tv on my monitor. The projector is in this really cool multimedia room we have on our campus(movie quality surround sound, networked computer, interactive whiteboard etc.) The person who used it at the end of last year left the thing running so it ran all summer with no one on campus to hear it or turn it off.
