to the best of my knowledge, if you are running XP, your computer shouldn't be disconnecting you when idle. Check the properties on your dialup connections, and under options, there should be a box that says "redial if line is dropped". Make sure that is checked.

Maybe your ISP is the one disconnecting you when you are idle?

Another thing is that (at least in the old days), if you have call waiting and another call comes in, you may get disconnected. Whenever you dial out you should precede the phone number with *70 to disable that feature while you are on line.

Call waiting? I have two separate lines. One for the phone and one for the computer. Does call waiting still affect the line that is just for the computer?

Edit: That question must sound obvious, but I really have no idea. I'm not much of a computer person (obviously). I was much better with a typewriter and abacus.

It may be your ISP (internet provider). If that's the case, you're screwed and would need to get a different ISP. Try calling their tech support and asking them if they disconnect when idle for X amount of time.

I think I will probably switch service providers because the one I have now doesnt offer high speed dialup or dsl (?) to personal users. They only offer that to businesses.

    Thanks for the help.

If they are on the same phone number and you can use the phone while remaining dialed in, then call waiting probably doesn't affect your dial-up connection. If you can only do one or the other, then it MAY. Phone technology has generally advanced to the point where a call waiting "beep" should not hang up your dial up, but it is possible.

Oh okay, it's two different phone numbers.

    Thank you.

    1) Your ISP might have a setting where EVERYONE gets disconnected after x hours. They do this so you purchase a dedicated line.

    2) otherwise they do it based on how idle you are. google anti-idle software.
