Hey guys, I know this comes up a lot, but my mom's having one of those "should I jump on board this sale that's ending tonight" dilemmas, and I thought I'd throw it out to you. My mom's computing needs are like most people's: Microsoft Office and e-mail/internet. She also uses SAS for work. I figure any desktop on the market is fine for her (although she'll probably want to add a floppy drive since she still has stuff on disks) She's currently using an old 98SE machine that's probably due for retirement. Dell's having a sale and my mom's eyeing their cheapest desktop (Dimension 3000). It's currently available at $539, including a free 15'' flat screen monitor, printer, and shipping. My mom's coworker recommends that she gets it, so she's thinking hard. See link below. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_dp_desktop1_1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs We have another serviceable computer, so it's not catastrophe if the one she's using goes down. There's also a possibility my dad might splurge on a more expensive model for his small business in the next six months and give his business computer (which is only a year and a half old) to her. So the question is: is this as good a mainstream deal as will likely be available over the next six months?
SAS? I didn't know it was still around. Dell has Specials quite often, so it isn't that much of a rush to close the deal tonight. Another deal will be available shortly. What kind of monitor is attached to the '98 computer? Would it be OK for the new machine or is a new monitor helping drive the urge to buy?
Buy from dell small business because it is cheaper and look on techbargains.com for dell deals. You should be able to get a dell 4700 with 17" lcd for that price.
Yeah, don't worry about the deal ending -- Dell has great deals every week. Your best bet is just to check a site like Ben's Bargains every day, and you'll keep up with whatever specials are going on. Make sure you put Firefox on it for her!
Thanks for the input, guys. How's Dell's customer service these days? Used to have a terrible rep some years ago. I hadn't thought much about Dell, but if you guys feel their PCs are a good value, I will definitely encourage my parents to go with Dell if they decide to buy in the next few months. Vengeance, my mom's old-fashioned, although I'll try to sell her on it. I've got two converts to Firefox so far.
I ordered that Dimension 3000 last night without ever seeing this thread. I've been working off of a work issued laptop for two years...It was time to spring for my own. Not bad for a pinch over $500.00 shipped, Including the Free 15' flatscreen monitor, free printer, and free 2 day shipping.
