My computer has started giving me a lot of troubles in the last few weeks and has now got to the stage where it just lockes up once everything is loaded and fired up. at first it seemed to be when my ADSL modem was turned on first and the software associated with that was firing up it was locking up. But removed the software and was turning on the modem after the computer and it seemed to be working for a while but now it starts fine and then just gets stuck. Tried to re-install XP pro (just the upgrade method) not the complete wipeout harddrive install as i have some large mpegs that i downloaded and don't have a dvd burner to get them off. Any advice on what i could do to fix the situation.
Reinstalling windows into your current location on your hardrive would be a good thing to do. Are you sure you don't have a virus? I also have a COMPUTER PROBLEM. Everytime I open up IE it tries to load a file (that was some how downloaded with out asking) which is a webpage saved on my c drive in my windows folder. I located the file and deleted it but it is still trying to open it everytime I open IE and it is annoying since it gives me the error message telling me the file can't be found. I have tried to change my homepage over and over but every time I reboot my machine it goes right back to looking for that file. It is pissing me off.
done the re-install... i think not sure about a virus, have virus software, will start in safe mode (that works) and will run a scan
Smeg, have you installed anything lately? try going thru and uninstalling everything that you dont need. Its a shot in the dark, but you never know. If all else fails, get yourself another drive for storing those *huge* mpegs on, that way when you get the inevitable Windows problems, you dont have to lose them.
ctrl-alt-delete and look in your task manager. Look for anything unusual. If in dount check this http://www.answersthatwork.com/ goto task list and find out what's wrong.
tried again last night added a new virus program, scanned found nothing ran the check disk function thingy, the one that requires you to restart to get it to scan seems to be up again, although was going to bed by then so will try again this arvo when i get home R2K - might go get another drive today, have a 80 gig now but only 20 free, might get 120 gig today and then after xmas will get a dvd burner, okie doki????
When I have these type of problems, I almost always find that it was something I installed recently - even seemingly harmless things. For example - a USB SD card reader was causing Blue Screens of Death and incredibly long re-boot times. Is your ADSL modem USB? USB can be the cause of many ills!
nah my adsl is not usb but usb has given me grief before and i suspect my be the cause of my problems now too. usb driver on xp seem weird, since i upgraded to pro i can't get my scanner to work, think it needs usb 1, tried to add it a month back and it might what is causing the problems ps DAVO - i will be in perth in late march and early april we must have a beer
if you can remember the exact date you started having these problems, you can run a "System Restore" that will reset your computer settings to which ever particular date you select. Just as a warning though, any programs you've installed since then will be removed in the process. I've had errors with certain programs but after running this it usually corrects the problem.
may I suggest going getting these two programs to remove spyware on your computer..... Ad-aware http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-1 Spybot Search and Destroy; I like this program a lot. You can adjust the sensitivity, and it also has an email scanner... http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1
You could try transcoding some of those large mpegs, to reduce them in size, then you could burn them onto CD. If they were, say, about 1.6 Gig, they'd reduce to around 700MB as a DivX or XviD file. Give me an email or google it if you want to know more.
how much memory do you have Smeg? Try adding new ones if you have extra RAM. Go to run msconfig and look at the startups. Uncheck anything that's unnecessary.
have 512 memory and a 80 gig hard drive, but i am gettting a new hard drvie today, might get some more memory but i think i only have two slots and they 256 in each
