I am currently having an issue where the computer freezes, mouse still works but nothing happens when I click on tabs and when I try the back clip the tab just duplicates these happen at random times and sometimes clear itself or I have to get the computer to sleep and then turn back on and it works for a while.

I have windows defender but I am showing no viruses Is there something else I can do to get a diagnostic for the computer?

Is there a reputable place I can go to have the computer checked remotely?

is there a good diagnostic tool I can buy?

    Pc or laptop?
    How old is the PC
    What version of OS
    What browser

Could be p*rn virus / malware.

I think Avast was a good free antivirus a decade ago.

One malware/virus trick would be to turn off your wifi when it happens (yank cord for better effect). If it comes back to life, then it def something in the background doing some naughty business

Hardware wise, it could be ram...your computer or your vid card. If your hard drive is dying, you could hear clicking (not ssd) but i dont think it would muck up your computer like that. Maybe with ssd drives. If i were in your shoes, I'd google your symptoms plus the hardware you think is busted

There are ram diagnostic tools out there that sweeps your computers ram piece by piece. Don't inow if it can do vid card tho

Been a while since I've used windows but still remember the issues

What browser are you using? See if it happens when using an incognito window.

This is why I use a desktop at home. 37 inch screen, and anytime anything fails?

Assuming you have a hard drive and not SSD, you may want to Defrag it.

Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware

You mentioned tabs. I'm assuming this issue mostly occurs when you're on a web browser?

Can you try installing different web browsers with tab options and see if it's a recurring issue even with a different web browser? If it happens on Chrome, does it happen on Edge or Firefox or Opera?

If it only occurs on the single web browser that you primarily use, like say Chrome or Firefox, then it could be a recent Extension or customization you installed. Try removing that and see if it helps.

If the issue occurs on all web browsers, you may have reason to be suspicious of something like malware.

    If you're suspicious of malware:

Spybot: Search and Destroy is alright and has a free edition for scanning.

Malwarebytes also has a free edition for malware scanning.

Bleepingcomputer's Virus, Trojan, Spyware and Malware Removal Help Forum might be better to ask for help if you discover it's a malware issue that the above programs can't remove automatically themselves.

I'd probably try any one of the scanners above or all of them and see what they pull up, if they even find anything. Chances are if they detect something and can't automatically remove it themselves, you'll need manual troubleshooting guidance on the Bleepingcomputer forums. Generally a 5 day wait time before they get to your ticket as it's all voluntary work on their part helping you. I usually tend to uninstall the malware detection applications after doing a search as I have experienced BSOD with Spybot for instance with it's background updater at random times. I just keep the installer packages available and re-install then scan every week or two then repeat.

If you've recently experienced a BSOD, you can trace what caused the crash by going to the search bar in Windows and typing in "reliability" without the quotation marks, then click on View Reliability History in Control Panel. It'll tell help you determine what caused the crash. If it's a recent software application you installed that's responsible for the crash, you just need to uninstall it and likely problem solved.

Which brings me to next point. If you can create a timeline of when you started experiencing issues, you may be able to narrow down if it's in part because of a recent software you've installed. If you go to Uninstall Programs in Windows, all software you have optionally installed that can be uninstalled will be available. Under each program is a date that indicates when the program was installed. If say you started experiencing these issues 6 weeks ago which would be the week of October 24th-30th and discover you recently installed a software application on those dates, try uninstalling that software and see if it doesn't resolve your issue. Some software that runs in the background isn't always the best coded and can cause things like memory leaks which can lead a crash.

If your computer has no malware and no recent software installations are the culprits, consider a Refresh, which is a reformat of Windows that then is freshly installed. If you're considering this option make sure to have an external storage device to backup data you want to hold onto that you don't want getting wiped. If even after reformatting your whole operating system with a fresh installation and you still experience issues, then you're likely dealing with a hardware issue.

Just service desk, sucks a lot. It's nice when the job is like 30-40 service desk, the rest of the 60-70% on projects. I found a job doing some service desk work that doesn't suck. All of my other ones did indeed suck.

I also left out the easy things like uninstalling the problem app or running MS updates. You could also update drivers or what nots you still do in windows, but the road to Computer Hell is paved with this type of ****.

Hmm, if it is a HDD starting to die, a defrag is the last thing you want to do. I'd start backing everything up and abandon ship before the defrag. Defrag normally does improve performance for smaller systems with limited RAM, but the OP's symptoms are the computer randomly freezing rather than general slowness.

My Mac would hang routinely. Defragging the disk cleared it up and flagged the bad sector(s).

It helped that I knew enough UNIX, that I could boot into the OS and run command line disk commands.

I guess guess running a deep disk diagnostic before defrag is recommended. If nothing pops up from the scan, then it's probably okay to do a disk intensive defrag
