My computer was working fine. Then all of sudden it gives me this message "Disk read error occured". It does not allow me to enter windows. Does anyone know what this message means?

If you can post in Clutchfans.Net with a bad Hard Drive, all is well! :p

I kid, of course. BACK UP your STUFF to another drive NOW!
So, I asume a "google" of +hardware +"Disk read error occured" +Windows brought no results for you?

I see no "i tried this and then i tried that" from you, so I am thinking you want us to search for you, maybe? I mean, not trying to be a smart aleck here, although it sounds like it, but it seems to me that you haven't tried anything... ?

Dude, at least JIGGLE the dang thing...

If the Disk Drive is truly bad ...

Get a second drive to build your machine again and use that drive as the secondary drive and try to get the data off of it.

If that still doesn't work, a last resort option is to put the drive in the Freezer to try and get some data off of it. I've heard both ways that this works and it doesn't, but if you don't have any other options, no reason you can't give it a try ... http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/01/freeze-your-hard-drive-to-recover-data.html

If that indeed works be sure to backup any important data ASAP.

Before cracking open your case, check the easy stuff first: Make sure you don't have a floppy disk in your drive (if you have one), as your system may be trying to boot from a non-system disk. Do the same with your CD drives. If all drives are empty, check your BIOS to make sure the drive is even being detected by the system. If it is, then it's time to crack open the case. Check to make sure no cables have come loose (improbable, but it does occasionally happen). You should unplug all IDE or SATA devices, reseat the cable for the hard drive, and try rebooting.

If your hard drive is not responding, there are some things you can try. In the shop where I worked, a customer brought in a system with a dead hard drive. Since the data was pretty important, but the customer wasn't willing to spend a few grand to send it to a data retrieval service, we had to get creative. I actually ended up not-so-gently tapping the drive with a ball-peen hammer right over the center of the platters. Crazy as it sounds, this actually jarred the read heads loose long enough to get the data off.

I DO NOT recommend this technique to anyone. ;)
