I want to network my home..from my downstairs computer to my one upstairs. There is wireless...which I do not want. Then there's wired... And there's HOMEpna by phone line. And you can connect using power line. You have a router, which is connected to the cable modem, which is connected to one computer. And another ethernet cable is connected to a powerline bridge which is connected to an outlet. Then you have another bridge upstairs which connects with cable to the network card other computer. Is that correct? You would need a router, some cables, and the bridges. The bridges are 100 bucks at Best Buy for Linksys ones and 70 bucks for Netgear ones. Is it possible to buy a router and cables and buy jacks? You have the cable modem which is connected to the router. The router connects to the computer downstairs and also connects to a jack. Then you have another jack upstairs..with a cable that connects to the upstairs computer. Is this possible? Also..does anyone use dual monitors? Two monitors for one computer where you spread the screen. Do you like it and does it lag a bit? Thanks!
I've started using dual monitors and not sure how I lived without it. I haven't noticed much of a problem but I'm doing it on a newer system, 2G, 1Gmemory, Radeon 9800 Pro, 2x1600x1200 screens. I play games every once in a while and don't bother switching to single screen mode, it works fine.
That's cool!!! I'll try it once I get my new computer.. Well I think my house is too old and doesn't have Cat5 or Cat 5e cables..so I can't do thing using the jacks...I'll have to use powerline networking HOMEPLUG... It's 14mbps. Do you all think 14 mbps is adequate for online gaming? For example..CS? Thanks
Wireless networking baby! The caveats - interference from other folks phones and computers, random drops of network ( but this happens to me and my computer is hooked directly to my dsl modem.) cost of wireless network cards, and random folks trying to penetrate your wireless network. Oh yeah, having 900G radio waves go through every member of your household 24/7.
considering that at most you will get 2.5mb/s over your cable line...the Home PNA and Electric plug and wireless all provide more than enough for online activities. I have used HomePNA and wireless....they work just fine for what you probabll want them for. If you have any plans on having a bigger network at home and doing file transfers or streaming a/v from one machine to another...I would go with ethernet(Cat5)....hell..I would go with Cat5 anyway...but thats just me.(100mb/s baby!) I would get some cables and run it from upstairs to downstairs thru the walls or whatever...and connect it to the broadband router(Im assuming you have open ports there?)...that would be cheapest as far as parts cost goes.. Equipment: Use Linksys over Netgear...Linksys hasbeen bought by Cisco..and when it comes to router technology...they are the shiznet. the easiest way would be wireless...you would have to buy a new broadband router/access point...but those are only 70 bucks or so. another 70 per computer for the wireless pci cards...and wa-la...you have networking...no cables to run.
Dual monitor user right here... I love it, no lag, but of course, I'm running it on a P4 - 2.8Ghz with HT technology... so I can do multiple things at once and not have any lag. I'm using a non-ATI video card (GeForce) to run these two monitors and one is digital... I have never had any kind of lag or slowness when using these. They are both 15" flat panel monitors and the set up kicks much butt!
Wireless and Dual Monitor here. Actually, only the laptop is wireless. No sense with my desktop since the router sits about a foot away. Also, upgraded my phone to 5.8 ghz to lessen the interference. Dual monitors...like the previous poster, How did I ever live without it.
Powerline and Dual Monitor user: I like powerline because the only device I use the powerline for is my PS2, and I don't seem to have any lag for it. I can't say how well it works for PC games since I have both of the PCs in the house hooked directly into the router. I was able to get the router and 1 powerline adapter for about $90 or less a year ago. I got dual monitors when I started developing in Flash and haven't looked back since. I have dual monitors at work and at home. About the only problem I have is for some games I have to switch to Clone mode to get them to run, which takes all of 5 seconds. B
