Hey guys and gals. I know there are some that browse this board who know MUCH more about the workings of Windows than me. I lady gave me her computer because she is having problems getting online and she wanted to see if I could fix the problem. She said her son installed and then ran a Spyware program, in which case her modem now can never detect a dial-tone. I have tried everything I can think of to get this thing back up and going again, but with no luck. I think that when her son deleted the spyware from the computer, one of the Spyware was attached to a registry file, thus altering it to cause the problem. This is what I think probably happened but I could be wrong. Anyone know what might be causing this if I am wrong, and/or know how to fix the problem? Oh, and they deleted the Spyware program already, so I just can't go in and restore what it had done. Any help is greatly appreciated!
It is quite possible that the spyware is not deleted - they can be quite malicious. Try running adaware and spybot for starters.
Is this an XP machine? If so, use System Restore to go back to a date before the spyware program was installed.
how bout you just reinstall the drivers for the modem... there are normally only two scenarios where the modem willcease detecting the dialtone....when the drivers are corrupted, and when the modem fails... I have never seen spyware screw with modem drivers....spyware is used to keep track of what you do online....they dont normally mess with hardware except to slow down the machines with dozens of running processes.
I too have a problem, some kind of a virus/worm, makes my IE stop working after about 5 minutes. I wanted to boot up in safe mode to scan and delete the virus, but it doesn't allow me to run msconfig. When I press control alt delete to look at the task manager, it appears and disapears in like 1 sec. So I can't use it. Same with the msconfig. It disapears like instantly. It also disables my virus scan. Is there any other way to get into safe mode? WinXP
Ups....reboot....and after it gets thru the intial bootup screen....start pressing F8 until you get the XP boot menu...then select Safe mode...
