I have a small problem. I need to use the USB drive on my computer. I plugged the devices USB cord into the computer, and then my computer wanted to install a drive. I accidently hit cancel, so it stopped the automatic setup. This was no big deal until something else went wrong. I pulled up my control panel, and nothing will open! Everytime I double click on a program , it does nothing! I right click, and then hit "open", still nothing! Its embarassing how big a piece of trash this computer is, but why is it doing this? Anyone have any advice? My computer wont automatically install this USB driver and I need to get this done!

    What OS?

Usually you can just do a search for new hardware installed under control panel and it will install the USB drivers automatically.

I have 98 second edition. I would "add new Hardware" but it wont let me open the program. I double click and it does nothing. I right click , and then try to open, nothing!

Yes, several times. I also tryed the other USB drive on my computer to see if it would auto install that, but it did not work. This stinks :(

Go to Microsoft.com and see if you can find a USB patch in the knowledge base. Sorry :(

When you are rebooting, make sure that the USB cable is not connected. Once the system is rebooted, try to get into the control panel.

If you are still having problems, do a CTL-ALT-DEL to see what 'services' are running. If you are familiar with what normal things run in Windows 98, you might be able to pick out whatever is not allowing your control panel to display.

    Hope this helps!

Make sure USB isn't disabled via BIOS settings.

Next, verify USB Root Hub and MB Controller is installed under Universal USB controllers.

    Good luck.

Hmm . . . I wish I could help you more, but this is one of those problems that I would do best to play with myself. The first thing I'd do is power the whole thing down fully and remove that USB hard drive. Then power it up. If that doesn't work at all, then restart it in Windows safe mode -- that should allow you to mess with stuff and get things back to normal.

Let me know if that works.

    Drew,

Make sure the USB port does not have anything plugged in when you reboot.

Alright, I gave in an ran by boot disk, without reformatting my hard drive. This seemed to fix the control panel problem and now everything is okay. Thank god I will soon be getting a brand new computer. This thing is such a piece of trash. Thanks for all the help guys.
