Ok so I'm needing some help on my current computer dilemma. I just moved in with a roommate and am trying to set up our wireless network. In my old place I had a Linksys router and had it hardlined to my desktop.

At the new place the feed is from my roommate's router. My problem is that my desktop doesn't have a wireless adapter built in and I don't want to buy one if I don't have to.

Initially I set everything up and used my router as an adapter. It found her router and I was able to get online. The only problem was that she didn't have any encryption on it. So we switched and used my encrypted router as the net source. All the devices could get online except my desktop. Her router connected to mine, but would not get on the net.

So then I went ahead and encrypted hers and switched them to their original places. Again, I can connect to hers, but can't get online. All other devies can, just not my desktop.

Sorry its so long.........heh heh. Seriously though, if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty confused by what you wrote but first question: why are you connecting two routers? You shouldn't have to.

You should have your router (with encryption) plugged into the cable modem and your desktop. Her laptop should be able to connect to your router via wireless.

I would just get a wireless adapter. They are like 50 bucks and you don't have to deal with all those wires.

The cable connection is in her room. I'm trying to use the second router as an adapter. It worked once when the source wasn't encrypted, but after moving things around, I'm not able to get a connection.

The other problem is, if I can use the router to connect wirelessly then I can hold onto $50. I can do some good with that money like support a child in Africa or buy a used game. :p

I've never heard of using the router as an adapter.

Do you not have some Cat5 cable sitting around to wire your self to her router? Or how about moving the modem to your room?

gotcha. well, i'm surprised there is no cable outlet at all from your place.

i'm going to agree with BMW on this one - you prob can even get a good USB wireless for under $30 at newegg. I like USB cause they come in handy for troubleshooting.

Yeah after posting this thread I just thought about that. There is an outlet in my room and it probably is ready to go. I'm just going to check that and hopefully be done with it. Its getting too frustrating changing wires and settings.

Powerline ethernet adapter, or get a wireless dongle or pci card, which is the cheaper option.

I think what you're trying to do is to make her router the main router, and your router as an access point. Unless the software on your routers can handle that, then you won't be able to do this. You can DD-WRT or Tomato if you have compatible routers and they provide this function.

I digress. Buy a wireless card and skip the hassle if you don't want to deal with it. I personally dislike wireless coming into my desktop, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Good Luck.

They sell wireless USB adapters for 15-20 bucks IIRC.

Yeah I don't know. It worked once with that set up, but then I moved things and all was lost.

Thanks though everyone. I went ahead and just moved the router to my room hardlined to my desktop. Sorry Swoly, no innuendo there. If I do see the "connection" at any point, you'll be the first to know. ;)
