So I spilled a tea on my two weeks from brand new laptop about a month ago. I immediately disconnected everything and turned the laptop upside down. Tea was leaking out. However, I didn't swith it off right away. I was installing some updates and didn't know what to do. The computer seemed to be running fine - except the tea leaking out part. Then I decided that I should switch it off so I held the power button until it shot down. However, whenever I pressed any button on the keyboard, the computer switched on as if it had went to sleep (I doubt this has anything to with it but...).

Anyway, I switched it off, got all the amount I could to leak out and left it upside down overnight. I could barely sleep that night and was hoping that the major components would be fine. To my surprise and relief, everything seems to be fine in the morning. Every button on the keyboard works and the computer works like before.

Around that time, Vista starts to freeze semi-regularly. I'd say once a day on average. I thought that if it was somehow connected to the accident, the freezing would occur more frequently. This did not seem to be the case. Then there's the fact that it's Vista.

So I installed Windows 7 a week ago to see if the freezing continued. It did. However, it seems to be happening more and more often the last few days. This morning my laptop froze about 5 minutes after powering up. I power it up again and this time it freezes about a minute later. I thought that this is it. I had some important files I needed today so I was panicking a bit that I wouldn't be able to get them. About 20 minutes later I tried again, this time in safe mode. I got the files and shut the computer off.

Now I've again started Windows normally and it's been about half an hour since I switched the computer on. I've noticed that the computer is more likely to freeze if I'm playing any media like videos (in particular) or music. It does freeze at other times as well but if I plan to watch a 40-minute-long show, I can almost expect the computer to freeze at some point.

Sometimes when it freezes, there's an audible sound coming from the computer. Haven't really noticed where from exactly but I think it's from the left side of the laptop where the CPU, the fan and the video card are all located.

I've asked around and for most people if there's no immediate damage, the computer works fine afterwards. I know there are experts on this board and, more likely than not, people who have at some point spilled something on their laptops. So I would like to hear your input - what's most likely to cause the freeze-ups, be damaged and what steps should I take. I really don't have the time to take the laptop to a specialist so I would like to hear other options first.

EDIT: sorry, forgot to post the model. It's an Acer Aspire 5739G. Some links from the website as Dei requested.

EDIT2: A lot of tea. A full cup. Without sugar (I've heard it makes a difference).

Do you have a link to your model's page at its manufacturer's website?

    How much tea?

You dropped a cup full of tea in your laptop.

Really, you should just feel lucky it worked for as long as it did afterward.

Sorry but it could be any number of things, the liquid could have seeped in and damaged anything on the MB. It almost sounds like the drive is randomly locking up on you, for example; I bet if anyone cracked it open there is quite a mess on the controller on the board.

You should probably realize you're gonna need a new laptop. :(

It makes difference cause with sugar your keyboard will become sticky and the buttons won't function properly.

Anyway when it lose the smell of the tea (if it hasn't yet) just send it back and say that you have a problems, you're newbie and you don't have any idea why that happened. Works like charm

    Offtopic:

and btw nothing beats one thread on Serbian forum "My colleague is strong"

After losing one screw from the laptop he just put another one and the laptop stopped working... Pics:

I'd suggest buying the accidental fall warranty from Acer (if they offer it) b/c it will cover spills. They will fix it up no questions asked, but just don't tell them you already have damage to the laptop b/c then they won't sell it to you. Also after buying the warranty wait a couple of weeks before sending it in so they don't get suspicious.

Put your laptop in a bag of rice. It will absorb the liquid.

Look it up on Google for more info.

In my experience, freeze-ups that aren't software related are generally due to either heat, or lack of power. Liquid inside a laptop could ruin heat conduction and short out power transfer, as well. The fact that it freezes under load would lead me to believe it's a heat issue.

In other words, you're boned unless you can get a replacement.

    1. Turn on laptop.
    2. Start timer.
    3. Turn off timer as soon as the laptop freezes.
(what was running? nothing. record the time)

Same, but change step 3 to start an internet browser.
(what was running? internet browser. record the time)

Same, but change step 3 to start a processing-intensive program like PhotoShop or Windows Media Player.

    Etc., etc.

Yeah, a heating issue could be a faulty cooling fan or processor, or even motherboard.

I wouldn't recommend installing an OS for which the laptop hasn't been tested. If it came with VISTA, reinstall VISTA. Don't "test" Windows 7 on a laptop that wasn't made for it.

allow me to piggy back with a similar problem. Something happened to my laptop, and now when I type a "T" it also types an "r".

I have the same problem with "b" and it types a "v" also.

typing "g" also types an "f" at the same time.

Here is what it looks like if I don't fix it.

I doubt it's anything that's been mentioned in this thread. Just played a game of 2k9 without problems. It may not prove anything but it does reduce the possibility of a heat or power issue significantly, no?

It has frozen twice more today while just surfing the web.

Should have turned the thing off right away and let it dry for a day or two. You might have lost everything during that update but at least the hardware would still work... anyways onto the important question. We talkin hot or ice tea?

Was it subtle on the pallet or strong tasting? Syrupy or light? How long did you boil the water? Was it unfiltered tap water? Bottled? Filtered?

    Possibly damaged the motherboard.

Back-up information and do a clean install of Windows 7. If the issue persists, you know it's not software related (not sure if you finished the updates you were installing when it happened) and that you probably need hardware repair/new computer.

This has happened to me before. Mines was an Acer as well. Lasted several months after I spilled Coke on it. Needed 300$ to repair it. So I said F that and bought a new laptop instead. Good luck.

While on vacation 2 or 3 years ago, my son set his laptop on the floor next to his bed. Woke up in the morning and knocked over a glass of water, right onto the laptop. Had never turned it off before hitting the sack. Now, it's a nice coaster. Large, but functional in an industrial sort of way.
