Ugh, I'm running XP right now and am not able to get to my desktop. here's what happens...

Starts up, tells me the Computer was not shut down properly... asks me to select a mode to run (Safe Mode, Last Good Configuration, Normal)

No matter what option I select, after a few seconds of trying to load I see a blue screen flicker for about half a second and then my computer automatically restarts itself and I'm right back to where I started from.

Someone convey to me your superior knowledge that I may continue to indulge in my hi-tech vices.

I called my very very valuable I.S. department, and they told me to tell you to reboot.

    :)

That's a joke of course. But that's about as good as it gets here.

Moe i had the exact same problem about 2 months ago. I ended up finding out that i had a Power Surge and 3 of my cards, including the ethernet card and modem had been fried. Once everything was fixed i had to reinstall XP

Happens to me in XP at work occasionally. It is most likely caused by a file being corrupt. Generally you have 2 choices. First you can try to repair WIndows by inserting your XP install disk and letting it load. Then choose the fix windows option. This may or may not work (most of the time it doesn't). Or you could do as I would do and do a format and re-install. Chances are you will be doing that anyway.

did your power just go out? we had several brief outages here in the Upper Kirby District... if you have a power surges and you don't have a $10 surge protector you could fry your system.

i recommend everyone have their PC's running through a surge protector at the very least, a back up battery with surge protector if you can afford it.

I don't think it is a power failure, I'm guessing it is a virus or a corrupted file.
