I'm trying to import an AVI file into Windows Movie Maker for editing and when I do, it says:

"The file [insert file name here] cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

It doesn't say what the codec is, and my options are set to automatically download them (which it tries to do and fails). Any ideas?

I've never had this problem until a few days ago.

    :(

Yes I have, but not the program ;)

Seriously though I just downloaded that and put the video into it, but it tells me I have 2 codecs that should be able to handle the video and 3 that should be able to handle the audio. It plays just fine in Media Player, but I can't import it into Movie Maker. I'm still stumped.

Movie Maker mightn't be compatible with the video or audio codec your file was encoded from.

Thanks for the help, hooroo. I figured it out. Just had to download the xVid codec.
