i take my laptop to school and work on notes there and when i get home i use my desktop to work on the same files. i usually just use a usb drive or lan to move files but is there any software that enables me to work on files from dfferent pcs and have them sync?

just always save to your flash drive... basically making it a harddrive. dont bother copying to your computer then back after you work on it.

theres also: remote desktop or use a FTP as a harddrive.

If you use Windows, Synctoy by Microsoft works well for me and it's free
    SyncToy

Always save onto your USB Flash Drive, but use "echo" with the SyncToy to save to an alternate place on your desktop PC.

Work on your USB Flash Drive while on your laptop, and use "echo" with the SyncToy to save to an alternate place on your laptop.

Now you have 2 alternate places from where you can restore whether you should lose any data in any of the 3.

    *Bonus*
Place a batch file or a timed Scheduled Task on your flash drive to run the SyncToy every time you connect. Wham-o, you don't have to tell it to do it all the time.

*Bonus* on your desktop PC, make a folder "networked" and share it with the laptop user, use SyncToy to do "echo."

Another vote for sync toy (chronosync for Mac).

But if you have ubiquitous internet access, Dropbox is another solution. It syncs your computers as well as backup your stuff online (I think 2 gbs for the free account) automatically. Instead of running synctoy, you just make sure this program is running and you're online and the changes are always updated automatically. (Works on Windows & Mac)
