Scenario: Windows XP PC has a virus. Owner wants to transfer some basic files from this PC to new hard drive for back up and format XP hard drive. Owner then wants to purchase new laptop. I have taken the hard drive out of an old Windows XP Home laptop and placed it in an external enclosure. I've hooked it up to a Windows 7 laptop to try to access music and pictures in order to transfer them from the old hard drive to a new one. Every time I try to access a folder or file I have to give ownership/access of the file to the new computer's account user. These are the steps I have to go through: Spoiler The Windows XP account these folders and files are under had no type of password protection. I have to do this every time. I assume I can check that box on screen 4 above and give new ownership to all folders and files within a specific folder, correct? If so, does this affect who else can access/use these folders and files if they are to be placed or accessed on another PC or device?
Pun. I had a similar problem when I tried the same process with a Memory stick. And honestly I can't tell you what I did to fix it, other than the error message is a false one in the sense that there wasn't any code permissions set most probably. This is a common issue that happened to me. I believe that what I ended up doing was trying to "clean" the file to get it ready to copy to windows 7. Don't ask me how I did it cause I don't remember myself.
I found this: Hope it helps. http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/transfer-files-and-settings-windows-easy-transfer/
Not sure if I can use this as I only have the hdd and not the actual laptop. I'll look at it though. Thanks for your comments though.
Use linux for this purpose. Get a liveusb like puppy linux (100mb). Mount the device. Then you can use dd to do block copy of every byte. Or just copy the file using the cp command.
The files seem hidden. Go to the main file> right click on it> go to properties> go to the security tab > click advanced> click change permissions> click add>type everyone> click check name> select ok You basically just need to give yourself ownership of the folder or drive.
Disregard the above. In that last screen sh click other users and oups> add everyone and select okay> then make sure to click replace owner
