A friend told me they heard Steve "Snapper" Jones on the radio yesterday. Someone called in and asked what the chances Webber will end up in Houston and he said, "Zero percent."

    Why?

Because "Webber wants to play in a big market." Huh? He said that Webber doesn't want to live in a "country" town!!!!!

    Oh, brother. [IMG]

Who cares what Steve Snapper Jones says. I mean the guys nickname is Snapper. He should automatically be disqualified from having any insight for that alone.

CD and Rudy are not dumb. They had trades on the table that they did not take for a reason. We may not get Webber in the summer, but we definitely have a shot at him.

It seems a lot of people are underestimating Houston. I was listening to some show on 1on1 sports radio (maybe Kevin Wheeler? not sure). Anyway, someone from Houston called in and asked him the same question. he also said Houston had no chance. One of the reasons he gave was that Hakeem's salary wasnt going to free up that much cap space especially after the Rockets gave Mo Taylor a "huge contract"...WHAT??? It seems people on a national level arent giving the rockets a chance - and not even fair consideration.

Houston is so incredibly underrated, it's obscene.

People are dumb or blind. What "big market" is Snapper talking about? NY? Why does everyone think the basketball world is only NY or LA? It's frustrating. No; more. It pisses me off.

The only reason this market is "small" now is because the Rox are still in that tweener stage, not quite "suck" and not exactly great.

And Houston fans are fickle; in Salt Lake City and Sacramento, you have less traffic to fight to get home and fewer entertainment options, so the small town atmosphere makes for more rabid fans.

I think Houston is perfect for Webber. Perfect teammates, perfect city---half laid-back, half-cosmopolitan, completely diverse.

I hope we sign Webber, not only for the championships but also for the sake of those who believe the pro sports world is only on the east or west coast.

There's a big difference in market size and city population.

Houston is like the 10th or 11th largest media market even though we are the 4th largest city in the country.

Besides, you can't go by what C-Webb is saying right now anyway. It's like a game to him the way he has every city hanging by strings. Today he was quoted as saying how much he loves it in Sac. It's all a game. I'm sure he'll go where the top $$ is. If several teams offer the same max salary THEN he'll probably base his decision on the actual location, friends on the team, and chances of making a run at the title.

    That's just my guess....

Despite the size of the city, those NBA analysts only have a few teams in mind when the words "big market" are uttered.

    LA
    NY
    Boston (used to be anyway)
    Chicago

    maybe Detroit too....

Besides, who is going to take that seriously from a guy called SNAPPER?

Snapper is the worst. Can you guys tell me of anything more tired than the way he and Bill Walton fight like little broads during the NBC broadcasts? I get so sick of listening to both of them...I usually have to turn the sound down.

Here's another tidbit on Snapper--back when the Latrell Sprewell incident happened he tried to tell everybody that it wasn't a big deal, that that type of stuff happens all the time and that he didn't know what all the fuss was about.

    Please go away you idiot.

I get the feeling Snapper is gonna eat crow next summer. People always underestimate Houston, and that's fine.

We may not be a "large market" per se, but we have the advantages of a large market. Heck, the metro area is 4 million and growing, so it can't be that bad.

Larger markets like Philly, Detroit, Boston, etc. have no chance at Webber for a variety of reasons.

I think we could be considered co-favorites, but then again, I'm not the Snapper.

Anybody else have a problem with Snapper calling Houston a "country town ?" I think he's stereo typing an entire city. Houston is pretty diverse, imo.

He was interviewed on the Rich and Charlie show on 610AM when Portland came in, and said the same thing. He really didn't sound like he had much insight into the matter, though. Rich and Charlie didn't follow up because it was clear he hasn't heard a lot of the talk on the subject.

Moral of the story, don't let someone's ignorant point of view bother you.

I think I heard Rich say he thinks it's about 60% that Webber will come to Houston based on his claims that he wants to stay in the Western Conference. That eliminates Orlando and New York. After that, what's left? Houston has the city life over Sacramento, so if you can believe what Webber is saying, I'd say Rich is in the neighborhood of probability.

Snapper Jones isn't good for anything but starting stupid arguments with Bill Walton. Let me tell you, "know-it-alls" like Walton don't know WHAT the players want, it's the current players who circulate the information around the lockerrooms, get togethers, etc. Houston is respected. The players don't listen to what ESPN says, or any other sports "expert", they draw their own conclusion. The Rockets will be fine if they chase Webber.

It's hard to believe that people today still hold certain sterotypes of Texans. I still meet people who come to Houston and are stunned that we don't ride horses to get around. Houston has a terific nightlife which will make Webber a happy man.

Austin has a good nitelife also, he can always commute to 6th street, lol.

Is Houston one of the leading homes to NBA players ? I heard it was.

Also since there isn't a state income tax, how much more money could Webber keep if he signs here ? Let's say he makes 14 million, is it safe to assume that 5.5 or so million would go to the federal govt. ? How much would say a state income tax take off ? I know there is a tax lawyer among this bunch, so help me out.

There a lot of things in this city that can help get Webber. He says he wants a night life, but also wants pice of mind. In Sac there's no nightlife and in NY there's no piece of mind. Houston is good for both. The state not having an inome tax helps too. Plus he can always have All-Star like practices at The Westside Tennis Club over the summer. As far as H-town not getting publicity, I guarantee that if we get C-Webb we'll get a lot more publicity (he's already in every NBA related commercial!) Plus if he saw ESPN's "The Life" with Steve and Cat he'd know that there's great chemistry here. I think we have a good chance at getting Webber. Houston may not get a lot of love, but "Never underestimate the heart of a champion."

Actually, it's pretty sad. The word "Texas" comes up and people think it's a cow town and the population is made up solely of hicks.

    Huh.

I ain't no heeyeek, aiyund if C-wayub wants tuh c*m heere hee weeel. We-yere coo-well. I mean, we got Steevie righ-yet?

Screw Snappy. He probably thinks Houston is like what it was way back when Sam Houston was alive.

Of course, he probably doesn't know who founded H-Town anyways. [IMG]
