Will I still be able to play games w/o lag? PC games and PS3 online games. I download TV show torrents as well. This won't take days to download with the 6MBPS connection will it? Is it worth the price difference to get the 16MBPS instead?
It is very very fast, but you are still limited by the LCD of the other players that you are playing with or against, and their connections. 6mbps is the equivalant of 4 T-1 lines. If it is 6mg up and down.... DD
i think you can download a p*rn in about 30 minutes at that speed. not sure if you want to wait that long.
Divide it by 8, and you get your speed in bytes: 6 Megabits/8=.75 Megabytes per second. Edit: Yep, that was r****ded.
Exactly right. Good to break it down like that because when you download a file, it's typically measured in megabytes, not megabits. 8 bits = 1 byte.
So there is currently a promo for comcast that is 19.99 for 6 months for 6mbps. I don't want to get a cable TV package just yet since I don't have a TV. I have a 24" HD monitor that is capable of 1080p but I don't really want to spend money on a cable package to watch TV on it. Another question is does Comcast force you to sign a 2 year contract no matter what service you get or can you cancel after the 6 month promo is over and order another promo package?
6MBPS is pretty solid. I have the same thing, but I used to have the 15MBPS which i now miss. With 15 Down, you're downloading a HD TV Show (Size ~ 1.4 GB) in about 10 to 20 minutes. Now the same file takes about 1.5 - 3 hrs depending on the time of day i'm downloading cause its cable. Verizon FIOS isn't avaliable in my new place but it was well worth the price at my old place. FIOS was $55/month and now Comcast 6MBPS is $44/month
Just tried to get on the 19.99 per month cable internet plan and they said it's for current comcast customers only. Maybe that will help some of you guys out.
Lag has very little to do with bandwidth. It is mostly latency. No matter what your speed is, you can't change your latency. 6 mbits down is enough. Craptacular up from comcast is bad.
I have the 6MBPS package in my house, but when I test my connection speed at various websites, It's always around 13-17mbps. 20 sometimes, on a good day... I just got that.
It's pretty spiffy. I've got the 3.0-6.0 mbps package from ol SBCGlobal. I get about 4.9 but that's pretty blazing fast to me. At 4.9 mbps, or about 600 k... **** is fast, lol. You can download a 100 mb file in about 3-4 mins or so. Used to have their 1.5 mbps package and now it's like I was on dialup, lol.
That's their power boost thing, where they take the limits off for the first 10 seconds of a transfer before throttling your speed.
