sounds like it has nothing to do with police shootings or discrimination. So either this is a cause he just started, or he doesn't really want to do much except show the public he doesn't like the USA very much.

Since Trump is actively campaigning championing his stances which are contrary to the constitution, it's strange that Trump supporters would be against this move by Kaepernick.

I guess symbolic stances are more offensive to some people, than actions that directly go against the Constitution of the United States. It's all so odd and crazy.

 

regardless of whether he's right or wrong, it's basic professionalism to not be a distraction in the workplace, which he is deliberately setting out to do

The tearing down of Kaepernick begins. I'm pretty sure Kaepernick asked for a trade in the offseason. Is it just NOW starting to make sense? Bahaha.

 

Exactly. When Trump runs for President under the idea that America isn't great, that's okay. But if a QB has some gripes and uses his constitutionally guaranteed right to voice his displeasure about something, he's rotten.

 

The problem is that this guy doesn't do anything to fight social injustice. Maybe if he tried to do something else first and make a difference, and was frustrated than something like this could make sense.

 

When trumps says make America great again hes talking about the old days when black people were even more oppressed than they are today.

 

That was my initial complaint about how he was protesting now. But if that's the gripe and this his first stance in an upcoming effort from him in order to bring about changes, then it isn't a big deal. Actually it isn't a big deal either way. He can protest however he wants, it's just that more serious-minded activists won't take him seriously.

You'd be surprised at how many didn't know about this...

...Francis Scott Key (who wrote the 'national anthem') was a strident proponent of slavery. He was the son of a wealthy plantation owner (and really, what European white guy of any social standing back then didn't own slaves)...

...and actively campaigned against any abolition of slavery...even going so far on one occasion to have an advocate for slavery's abolition tried for sedition, in order to help set a precedent for silencing (if not outright destroying) the abolitionist movement...

...Key believed that Negroes were inferior and subhuman. Publicly said so, repeatedly. That part of the 'Star Spangled Banner' you highlighted references the Battle of Baltimore, from the War of 1812 (you know, that war where the USA was trying to take Canada away from Britain...among other things?)...

...British naval fleet had surrounded the port town of Baltimore (which was a fort at the time...Fort McHenry, I believe) and shelled it for over a day with cannon fire. Key himself was on one of the British ships negotiating some peaceful resolution or some such (because the U.S. wasn't having much luck this time in a fight with England), but had to stay on the ship because the English didn't want him giving any information to the garrisoned American forces. His night on the ship watching this is what inspired him to write the song.

England offered any slaves at the time freedom if they joined England's side. Several Negroes fled to the English side (a great number winding up in Nova Scotia and other places)...a good dramatic exposition on this is presented in 'The Book of Negroes'...both the book and the movie...if you're interested...

This "slave insurrection" as Key put it, enraged him, and he spared no expense in doing his best to stamp out any thought of freedom for slaves, or any surcease for anybody supporting freedom for slaves.

...anyway, most of us have a hard enough time reciting the FIRST verse. Not a surprise that it's subsequent stanzas are all but forgotten.

He sure can. But this seems more about attention whoring than standing up for something - at least it comes across that way. I am just saying if he really believed in change, it rings hollow if all he does is this and then goes about his day. Sort of like a more high profile version of slacktivism.
