The chances of getting one are slim to none. Mainly because Mo's injury will cost him this year only. Which basically means, we'd be renting a player (Mason, Trent, whoever) for a year. This makes it nearly impossible to sign a player to be a backup for Mo after this year. Also, the chances of signing someone like Mason to only a 1-year contract also is slim as hell. Just wanted to point out that the Rockets don't have much to offer a FA, other than a 1-year contract.
I'm convinced that the GMs of the league have gotten together in an attempt to screw unproven or bad-attitude players like Marc Jackson and Anthony Mason. I don't really want Mason on this team either. He can't do sh-t against the PFs of the west. He's undersized as is and likes to have sex with 14yr olds.
We needed help at the 4/5 before Mo went down. A player, like Marc, could stay with the club, even after Mo comes back.
Marc Jackson could stay... or he could suck horribly and soak up the 4.5 million+ that it would take to get him away from the Warriors...
I don't know if the GMs are conspiring or JUST LEARNING. Hasn't just about every team gotten burned on long-term contracts awarded to unproven but brilliant flashes? We may be the worst, i.e. Maloney and Cato, but surely there are horror stories from every NBA team. I thought that Swopa said that the Warriors already had something like 13 or 14 guaranteed contracts. Are they really so eager to retain Marc Jackson, given the inspired pre-season play of Troy Murphy and the players already under contract?
IMO Rudy has empirically proven that he always goes for the best athlete on the board. I would not be surprised at all if he signed a power forward for more then just a season.
BTM The point isn't who will suck or how much they cost. It is what we have to offer, in response to kidrock8's statement. "Just wanted to point out that the Rockets don't have much to offer a FA, other than a 1-year contract."
Actually kidrock they could sign them for 2 years because there is a chance Mo might not be ready to go next season, plus if you sign a guy like Marc Jackson or trade for Jahidi White he can slide to center. So to just come out and say that there is a slim chance at signing a PF isn't entirely accurate, and is just an opinion.
While you were kidding, if everyone else skips the the Rocket route, it is very likely you will see him suiting up for us.
Obviously the Rockets could offer anyone a 1 to 7-year contract. That's not the point. My point is that would a player like Mason WANT to sign with the Rockets. Obviously, he probably wouldn't want just a 1-year deal, since he is getting up there in age. And would Mason want to sign a multi-year contract with the chance that he becomes a backup PF when Mo comes back? No matter how you slice it (years of contract), the Rockets will be hard pressed to sign a quality player. We might be able to sign someone like Santiago to a deal, but Mason might want some contract and playing time stability. The Rockets will be hard pressed to offer both. I wouldn't mind signing Mason and letting Mo go via trade a year from now. But I doubt that will happen.
Mason might want the stability of a long-term contract, but it doesn't look like he's going to get it. His best option at this point may be to make a couple million guaranteed this year and try his luck again in the next FA crop. In essence, he'd be a hired gun.
