The Coachella music fest is a few months away and the line-up is getting set to be announced. If you've never heard of it, its basically a three day indie rock fest. They also have a tent with electronic music and some hip hop artists. I guess the place is crazy with a bunch of modern art exhibits. Has anyone here ever been? How was it? I've wanted to go for some time and am now in Southern California, so I will be making it this year. I'm really hoping for a good line-up. Wish list would include: -Thom Yorke (Especially if he's got Flea with him) -Wilco -Arcade Fire -Spoon -My Morning Jacket -The Strokes -Wolfmother -Outkast Really excited about it. Should be fun.

I've been in both 2008 and 2009, and will go every year from here on out as long as I am able to. It's an amazing experience that you should check out if you have any interest at all. The lineup should drop in the next week, based on the past and things that have been happening lately. As for the list above, the Monklish blog is well know and loved and hated by many on the Coachella forums. That list she has up there right now is just too good to be true. Last year I think she ended up being about 60% right with her predictions. Wakko - If you have any specific questions about Coachella let me know. I've traveled from Houston each year that I've gone, so since you are in SoCal it will be a bit easier for you. You should check out the forums if you aren't already. I'm Harrisment on there too. Trust me that whatever it costs you to go, it's worth it. You'll become a full on Coachella addict like I am now.
I've been to both. Ultra is an absolute joke compared to Coachella. It's not even fair to compare them to each other.
I went in 08. I'll agree with you, the lineup last year did look really good. And looking back on it, the lineup when I went was pretty bad. I just felt it was completely unorganized when I went. There seemed to be all kinds of problems with sets not starting on time and the sound bleed was absolutely awful. If you are only into electronic music, then it's not a bad fest to go to. I'm just a much bigger fan of Coachella because of how well it is run, and there I have the option to go dance my ass off in the tent and then head to the stages to check out some of my favorite bands. They are completely different festivals. Coachella should be compared to places like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, ACL, etc.
only been to Coachella once in 2004, and it was one of the best live music experiences that I have had...would love to go this year but doubt I make it
Yeah that's exactly why I didn't go in 08', because the lineup only featured about 3-4 great DJ's. My friends went to Coachella in 2007 and he said it's the ultimate festival because it has everything. I went to Bonnaro in 2006, went to the "which stage" to see Cypress Hill and Damian Marley.. Freaking epic. I just love Ultra because it's not too far from South Beach and the women are exquisite. Plus I don't have to buy a plane ticket to Colorado.
i went in 2004 - radiohead, pixies, flaming lips, cure, air (the biggest surprise - they came off like floyd live and had texan earl harvin drumming for them) - this was my dream line-up so going was a no-brainer for me. the bands playing that year were what got me out there - i wouldnt go again just for the sake of going. its a cool festival and definitely worth checking out, but its just brutally hot. we took about 4 days driving out from austin and camped along the way. went to roswell and carlsbad caverns, city of rocks state park in w. new mexico (surreal), camped in the mountains east of phoenix, which was beautiful and freezing, even in may. ive been to a few different music festivals and i think this one was run pretty well. i remember we had to wait about 30 minutes to get in the first day, but not as long the 2nd day. its just that its hotter than hell there and there isnt a whole lot of shade outside the tents themselves. we found ourselves in the techno tent quite a bit just b/c it was coolest spot we could find. they restrict beer to w/in a confined area - you have to drink it in a roped-off area. i also remember a heaver police presence than at acl. had to be a little more sneaky w/ the goods! 2004 was the year that andy dick got arrested for smoking a doober in the vip area. i also have never seen as many people passing out as i did during radiohead/pixies - it was scary - we were pretty close and literally every minute or so i saw someone faint or being carried away. too many people drinking all day in the 110 degree heat. camping vs. hotel? - GET A F***ING HOTEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we camped at the coachella campgrounds, which although cheap, was uncomfortable, hot, loud and dirty. its the exact opposite of what you want after spending the day at a music festival in the desert. it kind of cools off at night, but the sun comes up at 7:00 and its hot as hell by 7:30. ive camped out at other music-festivals before, but coachella is just rough - the heat is bad, but they pack you in much more than they should and the worst thing is that the ground is covered w/ these small desert sticker-burrs that just get everywhere. its the desert, so its really dusty too. i had booked us a room in palm springs, which is about an hour away. but right before we left the other 2 decided it would be more convenient/cheaper to just camp right there. i went w/ the majority rule, but i was really missing the a/c, pool, shower, tv and bed.
yup...that 2004 lineup was epic. I stayed in a nice hotel in Palm Springs...it was perfect. However, getting out of the parking lot was a disaster. My girlfriend and I just took a 2 hour nap in the car and then drove out quickly. I'm assuming they have straightened it out since then. But yeah, best lineup ever
Yeah the 2004 show looked like a great line-up. One of the big reasons I didn't go last year was because I wasn't as thrilled with the line-up as much as other times. I would've liked to see RHCP there, though I've seen them already and most of the hipsters complain when they play. Harrisment- I'm going for sure this year. The question is what to do and how to prepare. Listening to some of you it sounds rough camping. My buddy talked about a couple of us just renting an RV, so we may do that. As for the line-up, yeah I've been checking those boards and am looking forward to it. I thought that most of those listed above were confirmed though. I'm trying to get an old friend to go and she's a big Muse fan. I wouldn't mind seeing them. Anyway I'm psyched.
Coachella is one of the best music festivals around. But like others have mentioned, it is damn hot. Better to hit up the Outside Lands Fest in SF -> never gets warmer than 65 degrees in Golden Gate Park. Basically has the same promoters as ACL.
semi-related, but i think i've decided my second bachelor party will be at jazzfest. black crowes, my morning jacket and allman brothers the first weekend.
