If we make th eplayoffs, does Rody win COTY. I'd be hardpressed to find a coach who's done a better job. Maybe Larry Brown, but getting Mutumbo hutrs his chances.

I've taken a good look at the schedule and it's not impossible for us to win 50 games this year. That's quite an improvement form last year. More importantly, the Rockets are succeding because Rudy creates situations for them to suceed (except Carlos damnit!).

I don't think Larry Brown should be a frontrunner. His team was what, 4th or 5th last year, and at least 2 of the teams that were ahead of the Sixers last year lost key players (Indiana and Miami). Plus the East just sucks.

Jerry Sloan and Rudy are the only two guys I could give the award to this year.

Larry Brown could easily win COTY this year. His team has the best record in the league, and has for much of the season, they are beating East and West teams alike, and they made the bold move for Mutombo.

I really don't think Rudy could win it unless we make a playoff appearance.

Jerry Sloan? Nah, Utah does this every year...and consistency has never been a good award consideration.

Alvin Gentry? The Clippers are much better than last year, but I still don't think he has much chance. Don Nelson? He is a possibility, simply due to the Mavs success and the all star year Dirk has put together. Plus he made a bold trade with the acquisition of Howard, and you'd be surprised at the weight trades and such hold.

Anyone know when they determine COTY?

If it's after the playoffs, if Rudy brings the team to a close 2nd round series, or beyond, he'd get serious consideration.

I think Don Nelson's the sentimental favorite.

    What about Don Chaney?

I don't think that Don will win. His team was expected to be a playoff contender. Additionally, having a free spending owner doesn't help. It gives the impression that money bought their record instead of coaching. Let's also not forget that he missed a couple of months. That might be fine for sentimental value, but it doesn't change the fact that he wasn't coaching.

I know that Pat Riley will get his customary votes. Why he considered such a god by some writers is beyond me. Jerry Sloan deserves some votes. As much as I hat Utah, at least he gets them there every year, and we know that's no small task. The only other coaches that stands out are Brown and Karl. Both of these guys have lot's of talented veterans. I believe that Brown has done much more with less talent, so he get's the nod.

I think if we make the playoffs and win 49-50 games, Rudy is the favorite. The voting is done at the end of the regular season. Playoffs won't count. I have always been proud of the fact that Rudy is our coach. There isn't a person in the NBA with more class (disregard the fact that most of the NBA completely lacks class). This would be a tremendous honor for him and the organization.

Let's get to the playoffs and get our coach his dues.

If the Kings win the west, Adelman would be a good choice, IMHO.

In the past I wouldn't consider him as a COTY favorite, but this year is different. Their whole team was relied on Zo. On defense they would play hard and if they let their guy past then Zo would clean up the mess. Their offense was a dump it in to Zo offense. It's amazing that Miami hasn't self destructed.

Imagine how bad the Rockets would have been if we lost Dream for the season when he was in his prime. If we were 12 games above .500 (like Miami) then everyone in Houston would be saying Rudy is COTY w/o a doubt.

Sure he's a prick and no one likes him, but you can't deny what he's done with the heat.

    Rocketsauce,

I too think Riley is completely overrated, but given the fact that Zo has been out, all the new faces, and that Miami is still playing good ball, this may be Riley's best coaching job.

I think it's between Rudy and Riley, but don't forget about Doc Rivers. The Magic have NO INSIDE GAME AT ALL, have had to deal with Hill's absence, and yet are still a playoff team. And they play an exciting brand of ball. (As you see, I've become quite a Magic fan, but the Rocks are still and always #1 in my heart.)

A team with Mason, Grant, Hardaway, and Jones still has a lot of talent and experience. Those 4 are better than roleplayers.

    NIKEstrad,

I agree, even without Zo the Heat still have a lot of talent. But you still gotta give Riley credit for winning with 4 new starters and handling all of the chemistry issues that come with acquiring so many new faces. It also shows how professional Grant, Jones, Hardaway, and even Mason are.

Nelson doesn't deserve it. He'll have the sentimental factor with his injury, but he's not that good of a coach. His son and Dell Harris and the other 12 assistants on that team are the coaches for the Mavs, not Don sr.

I'm surprised JR hasn't run in here and said Flip Saunders should be COTY! [IMG] Rudy definitely should be up there, along with Pat Riley for keeping Miami a float without their franchise player and an aging PG. Don Nelson, and maybe George Karl for getting Milwaukee to play to their potential.

I agree, though I think that Don Nelson deserves the award, if Rudy doesn't get it (he won't). I think the Mavs are the only team that has bettered their record more than the Rockets from last year.

I am surprised that HeyP hasn't posted in this thread yet... he is usually crying out, "Rudy for Coach of the Year!" [IMG]

You guys are all wrong. Clearly, COTY will be Rick Pitino. [IMG]

Rudy has really turned this team back into the right direction though , We have already won as many games as we did last year , And that says it all about Rudy's chemistry , All he needed was one year to clean house .
