What do you guys think. Has Artest proven himself enough to where you want him back. If so, at what price? Or do you think we need to go in a different direction? Or, does it depend on how well he plays in the playoffs?

    2. Put on your GM cap for a moment. Ron Artest is a free agent this summer. Considering how well, and quietly, he has helped the Rockets keep winning without Tracy McGrady, would you have any reservations about signing him to a lucrative deal?

Jack McCallum: Of course I'd have reservations. There are maybe three players in the league -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant -- about whom you don't have some reservations about signing or re-signing, be they reservations based on injury, chemistry or aging. Artest's history is that he's beloved when he arrives at a franchise, and all kinds of "Wow, Ronnie is such a great guy, we can't believe some of the stuff that was written about him" stories come out before he starts screwing up. It happened in both Indiana and Sacramento.

But, ultimately, the Rockets should (and will) re-sign him. I do believe he's a good guy at heart, perhaps he's matured, and without McGrady (whom they should get rid of), Artest is an absolutely necessary cog in their machine.

    Chris Mannix
: You always have some reservations when you are talking about hitching your wagon to Artest, but in this situation, they are minimal. Artest has been a solid citizen this season and arguably the Rockets' most valuable player. He's scored when he has needed to, and when paired with Shane Battier, he gives Houston the toughest 1-2 defensive tandem in the league. When you factor in that Yao Ming loves him, it's a slam dunk. There will be a market for the 29-year-old Artest this summer, but with the fractured economy and with teams clearing cap space for '10, I think Artest will be back.

Steve Aschburner: Despite his quirks and past distractions, as well as what I find to be his frequently aggravating shot selection, I've been convinced that he plays hard, he plays defense and he wants to win, which puts him ahead of many more user-friendly players in one, two or all three of those categories.

Scott Howard-Cooper: It's Artest. Of course I have reservations. My reservations have reservations. Artest is only worth the risk if he's the potential difference between winning a championship and falling just short, and even then I'm thinking three guaranteed years, max. There's no reason for a pretty good team or a lottery team to make a deal. No way I'm blowing Executive of the Year for a long tour of the Ron-Ron funhouse.

Only resign if the contract is resonable, won't hesitate to trade him either for a PG.

Yeah, I'd resign him for the right money and no more than 3 years.

I'd say a 2 year contract would be the best bet. I think Ron likes Houston.

4 years at an average of 10 a year with a team option on the fourth year.

If he can help us get into the 2nd round, yes. If he jacks up shots,no.
It's not entirely fair to him with our shortcomings but that's what I would do.
    No more than a 3 yr 27 M contract IMO,no 4th year option.

Just a thought.... we are most likely going to the 2nd round this year, knock on wood. Without Tmac. Last year was no Yao..

I'd say Ron might be the most important person on our team. just look it at.

    $8M/year is reasonable.

This is no time to be talking contract but just for kicks....

He's gonna turn 30 at the start of next season. Ideally I'd like a 2 year contract with the 3rd year being a team option but I wouldn't mind settling for 3 year/4th year team option. I'm curious to know what his asking price will be? He will probably demand upwards of $15-16 mil and we'll offer $10-12 around there. Wouldn't mind settling around $13-14 Million a year depending on how the rest of the playoffs play out and what his contributions are and who's available and going for what this off season.

It's too early to be talking about contracts right now. We are in the midst of trying to get out of the first round in over a decade. Contracts can be dealt with in the OFF SEASON!

Sounds nice to who? Me? You? Morey? Sure... but prepare to lose him if that's our final offer.

Do we have any other options?

If we don't sign Artest and don't bring in another significant piece, yet another year of Yao's career goes down the drain.

I don't think they can bank on getting a significant contribution from McGrady. Too much of a risk. If he comes back, great, but letting Artest go, bringing in nothing else and getting another year of gimpy McGrady would be an ugly situation in the short-term. I don't think the organization will look long-term until Yao's Rockets career is over.

Too funny, and he pretty much summarizes my own concerns. The Rockets would be nuts to give Ron a maximum length contract.

    clippers, ny, ...?
the salary cap will drop this year.
all nba team want to save money...
if artest can find some other team to give him big money,
    let him go.

I think you overestimate how much money he'll be able to get. I'd be very surprised if he ends up getting more than 10 million per.
