Fan gets Bonds' 713th ball, photo -- but no autograph

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Carlos Oliveras has a home run ball specially marked to assure authenticity.

It just doesn't have Barry Bonds' autograph as the slugger refused to sign the ball.

The 25-year-old Air Force serviceman bought his lucky ticket because he wanted to see Bonds chase Babe Ruth on the career home run list. Oliveras had little idea he'd be the one being chased -- by fans, by media -- after snagging career home run No. 713.

When the San Francisco Giants' slugger hit a mammoth shot in the sixth inning off Philadelphia right-hander Jon Lieber to put him one behind the Babe on Sunday night, the ball bounced around Section 202 and into Oliveras' hands.

"I never thought I was going to be lucky like that," Oliveras said.

This was the first game of the three-game series Oliveras and a friend attended. He bought the ticket two days ago because he's a Bonds fans and wanted to see a slice of history. Then he was part of it.

"Everybody was looking on the floor," Oliveras said. "The ball bounced to me. I grabbed the ball and I stuck it between my legs. Everyone was still looking around."

Oliveras, a native of Puerto Rico, said no one immediately tried to snag the ball because he had it hidden. When the media and Phillies security discovered he caught the ball, other Phillies fans -- many who spent the series jeering the sullen slugger -- started yelling for him to throw the ball back.

"It made me nervous," he said.

Oliveras, an Airman 1st Class who lives on McGuire Air Force Base in Fort Dix, N.J., paid $20 for his seat in Section 202, Row 7, Seat 24.

He said he is a Bonds fan and would probably keep the ball. He hoped it would have Bonds' signature.

Bonds said no when he was asked at his news conference if he would sign the ball if a fan wanted an autograph. Moments later, when an official asked if there were any more questions, Oliveras piped up:

    "Will you sign my ball?"

    Bonds smirked and said nothing.

After his news conference, Bonds shook Oliveras' hand and took a picture with him.

"I'm happy because I got a picture and he shook my hand," he said.

There was one signature needed though. Oliveras had to sign a waiver for Bonds' reality show.

    Yeah, never mind that

    a) he shook the guys hand
    b) he posed for a picture with the guy and
    c) Barry Bonds is not a Texan, Astro, or Comet.

You are so right. Bonds disgusts me. And I am not too happy with ESPN for continuing to glorify that SOB.

He only does things that directly benefit him. He gets to be in the picture, and he gets to use the guy in his reality show that no one watches. But if it was just for the fan, hell no. :) That's his right, but then he shouldn't whine when people don't like him.

Do you know if he has some sort of contractual obligation to charge for autographs guys like VY and Bush have?

The same place we always have. The Hangout.

    he smirked and said nothing.

he did a) and b) cause he had to. who doesnt shake someone's hand?

    not signing the ball indicates:
    1. Bond's thinks the kid doesnt deserve the autograph
    2. Bond's thinks the kid got a picture and a handshake, which is good enough already

    c) i'm so happy he's not a Texan, Astro, or Comet

When I was 15, I saw him at the mall...I asked for his autograph and he shook his finger at me as if to say "no". That felt awesome.

And then the following week Doc Gooden told me he didnt have time to give me his autograph. That felt awesome.

And then when Juwan Howard was playing with the Wizards, I saw him and he refused to give me an autograph because he had "already signed too many". That felt awesome.

    Yeah, never mind that

    a) Bonds only did those things for his reality show
    b) Bonds didn't give the guy the one thing he really wanted
    c) it's Bonds being his normal dick self

the Hangout is too disorganized. they have video game posts, people who have personal problems etc..

Why don't they have 'Other Sports Action' like they do for the NBA?

As far as I know, they aren't contractually obligated to charge for autographs - just at those shows that they were at. I'm not sure any contract that disallows you from giving away your autograph would even be legally enforcable.

I didn't ask Otis Thrope for his autograph, but he shook my hand and I told him how I appreciated his hard work on defense and his great outlet passes during the glory years.
He took a picture with me and said he was happy that I was a Rockets fan and appreciated the support. he was genuine.

Hakeem and Calvin Murphy signed my ticket stub back in the day.
They DIDNT HESISTATE. I said 'thanks dream!' and he said 'yo're wellcome!'

    These are TRUE SPORTS HEROES.

Did you see his smirk? This is one author's interpretation of the events.

The fan was happy about what he received, but let's not let that get in the way of bashing Bonds. You'd think it'd become less and less fun since everyone is doing it, but I guess not.

Yeah, you're right. I just laugh at the foaming of the mouth done by so many people when anything Bonds is brought up. The guy was happy, I'm not understanding the problem.
