Student suspended over call from mom in Iraq

Friday, May 6, 2005 Posted: 12:54 PM EDT (1654 GMT)

COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP) -- A high school student was suspended for 10 days for refusing to end a cell phone call with his mother, a soldier serving in Iraq, school officials said.

The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was "defiant and disorderly" and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.

The confrontation Wednesday began after the 17-year-old junior got a call at lunchtime from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion.

Cell phones are allowed on campus but may not be used during school hours. When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

Good for the kid. Someone should step in and revoke this suspension, especially since Mother's Day is on Sunday.

They should send the loved ones of the teachers to Iraq and see how they react to their phone call, idiots.

I would do more than use profanity if somebody forced me to hang up on my mom while she was in Iraq.

The school administartors have failed at their job.

No need to have them arrested, we'll just suspend them w/o pay. No undue hardship, just 10 days...

...or we can send them to Iraq to apologize to the boy's mother.

The kid was probably a complete jerk when asked to hang up the phone... being nice to people will get you along way in the world. Too bad most kids don't get it and think because of their "special circumstances" the world owes them a break.

When you are in a place where every phone call could be your last? The school authority were just brain dead on this.

I agree that most kids my age are morons. The way this article was written, though, (and it could have been written just to make the kid out to be a victim) it seems that the kid was respectful initially, just telling the teacher that there was no way he could hang the phone up on his mother, calling from IRAQ. From what they wrote, it seems he didn't get disorderly until after being taken to the office.

Yeah, using the cellphone at lunchtime to take a call from your mother in Iraq is really hurting the teachers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the allegations of profanity are outright lies made up by the administrators once they realized what idiots they were.

I guarantee I would be a complete jerk if someone tried messing with me if a family member of mine called me while they were across the world DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY!!!! I'm not making this a pro war or anti war thread because your views on the war should have nothing to do with what happened. This may be the last time he may ever get to talk to his mother and they are making him hang up???? No way, I would have been irrate and would have thrown a complete temper tantrum. Good for that kid. There are exceptions to EVERY rule.

If I was the teacher and the call had come in the middle of the biggest exam of the year, I would have let him go outside and take his call. He could have taken all day long and I wouldnt have cared. That call is infinitely more important that your stupid little classroom and your stupid little rules. Dont act so high and mighty.

Well, good for you. Alls i'm sayin is if the kid may have tried a little explanation he may have gotten a different reaction from the teacher, something other than, "I don't have to hang up, it's my mom from Iraq." Also what we don't know is this kids background, that would play into the type of reaction the teacher gave I would think. And what is to stop every gossipy teenager from being on the phone with their whatever serving in Iraq, you know, you let one you gotta let them all.

Whatever the case, hope he enjoys the ten day suspension, he should be able to talk to momma alot over theat time.

Unless he is calling 911 I don't give a crap who he is calling. The rules are the rules. Cell phones are a big problem in schools these days. Too bad they can't be banned all together. Their mommies and daddies would start crying because of "emergencies", even though they can call the school like when we were in school. It's a joke.

MB, you don't know the first thing. Phones, and text messaging are a huge problem. Teaches are not the phone police.

There is a difference between enforcing the letter of the law and the spirit of the law.

This was enforcing the letter of the law.

I have a feeling the Meowgi is just looking for an argument.

Come on, Meowgi. If a student sits there and texts people all day long instead of listening to you in class, it's their loss! They fail! They can explain it to their parents, and you can explain it to the principal if need be. BUT JEEZ! It's a call from this kid's mom in Iraq and it's during lunch! LUNCH! What's the harm in that? Would you find a way to fail him out of lunch too?
