you must be like 10 years old. 1980: SAS rescue ends Iran embassy siege The siege of the Iranian embassy in London has ended after a dramatic raid by SAS commandos. Five Iranian gunmen were killed and one was arrested. Nineteen hostages were set free but one died and two were injured in the cross-fire. Millions of people watched the rescue live on television as bank holiday entertainment on all three channels was interrupted to show the real-life drama unfold. he Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States that was triggered by a group of militant university students who took over the American diplomatic mission in Tehran, Iran on November 4, 1979. The students were supported by Iran's post-revolutionary regime that was in the midst of solidifying power. The students objected to U.S. influence in Iran and its support of the recently fallen Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. They held 63 U.S. diplomats and three other U.S. citizens hostage until January 20, 1981. Of those captured, 52 were held hostage until the conclusion of the crisis 444 days later.[1] The Munich massacre occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage by the Palestinian militant group Black September, a group with ties to Yasser Arafat’s Fatah organization. A remembrance ceremony was held at the Arlington National Cemetery Saturday to remember the Marines who were victimized by a gruesome terrorist attack 21 years ago. On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 a.m., a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where the Marine Barracks was located. After turning onto an access road leading to the compound, the driver rushed through a barbed-wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through the gate, and slammed into the lobby of the barracks. The driver detonated explosives with the power equal to more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. The explosion crumbled the four-story building, crushing service members to death while they were sleeping. The terrorist attack killed 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members who were stationed there to help keep the peace in a nation torn by war.

im not saying that the Iraq war is right or wrong, i'm just saying you don't know jack about history. how about those terrorists attacks against Americans on 9/11? how about : On the evening of June 25, 1996, a truck bomb exploded in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. This terrorist attack killed 19 men of the U.S. Air Force and wounded over 500 other Americans, Saudis, and Bangladeshis. The bomb tore away an entire wall of a high-rise apartment building, part of the Khobar Towers complex housing U.S. Air Force men and women assigned to nearby Dhahran Air Base. The USS Cole bombing was a suicide bombing attack against the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) on October 12, 2000 while it was harbored in the Yemeni port of Aden. 17 sailors were killed. This attack was often seen as a precursor to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
I take it we aren't talking about the Irish. In terms of middle east aggression, The new war on terror has created a problem that simply was not there before. WOW. so in a discussion of the history of terrorism in the UK, 2 of the 3 examples you give are in other countries. The one UK example you pull out was from 1980. So in the 23 years between that siege and the British invasion of Iraq, you can't find anything else? Or do you just not know as much about history as you thought you did? July 7 2005: London bombings – Bombs explode on one double-decker bus and three London Underground trains, killing 56 people and injuring over 700, occurring on the first day of the 31st G8 Conference. The attacks are the first suicide bombings in Western Europe. July 21 2005: Attempted London bombings - Small explosions in three London Underground stations and one double-decker bus. August 10 2006: A major anti-terrorist operation disrupts an alleged bomb plot targeting multiple airplanes bound for the United States flying through Heathrow Airport, near London, UK. June 29 2007: Suspected Islamist terrorism car bombs plot against theater district in London. That's 4 incidents related to newfound middle east aggression. 4 incidents in the 4 years since England went into Iraq. So TINMAN, if you want to cite an incident in 1980 to point out that this is just business as usual for the UK, then please cite 23 others since then so you can keep pace with the 4 incidents that have taken place in the last 4 years in the UK. How about 10. 10 attacks or plots in the 24 years preceding the attack on Iraq. Do that and I will say that I don't know about history and that the War on terror didn't actually bring about MORE violence on UK soil from middle east terrorists than there were before.
The US has always been meddling in Middle East affairs for a long time. For example in Iraq during the first Gulf War and the many years of sanctions that followed. Further examples include positioning of troops in Saudi Arabia. Imagine if China opened a military base right outside Houston. How would you feel? A little edgy right? US has a history of diplomacy to serve its own in the Middle East: US helped overthrow the Prime Minister of Iran in the 1950's. This was a very Western minded government of Iran at the time mind you. Then it was taken over by religious fundamentalists we still see today. Also funding the mujahadeen in Afghanistan in the fight against Russia. The same weapons given to the mujahadeen fighters in Afghanistan are being used against the US troops today. In Iraq-Iran war, the US gave Saddam Hussein chemical weapons to fight that war. If the US would mind their own damn business, it wouldn't get in trouble so much.
Hey, the US won the British Empire fair and square during WWII. How else are we supposed to run it if we don't meddle?
this doesn't make islamists the good guys here. they suck. the middle east sucks too. dont think that the us there is the main problem. they've always had wars etc in the middle east. sweden it aint.
