Edited table with revised minimum salary numbers. Difference in math not significant.

    ^ You got it, CH.

If the Rockets are TRULY committed to bringing back Dragic and Lee at (almost) any price, then it might make more sense to keep/trade Dalembert (rather than waive him) and just forego cap room altogether. They could still have the full MLE ($5M) plus the BAE (~$2M) as opposed to their "cap hold/sans Dalembert" scenario ($8.1M).

Just something to consider, and even that is moot if (really, WHEN) the Rockets make some other maneuvers.

Martin's trade value would increase this coming season since his contract is expiring.

I think after all the Rockets will let Dragic go for free unless they do a draft trade involving Lowry. Of course no way Goran + Kyle.

I think it's pretty clear that we've got to get rid of Scola. That $11 mil in 2014-15 is a killer. Other than that, Morey's done an excellent job managing our cap.

CH- one question though: How do you figure we keep Dragic for one more year at $4 mil in a couple of your scenarios? He's a UFA.

That's Dragic's cap hold. Same for Lee.

What do you mean by cap-hold? Dragic is a UFA. His cap number will be determined by what he agrees to resign for; if he resigns. No?

The cap hold is meaningless in the salary cap analysis when a player value is much higher than the hold, Lee's cap hold value is about right.

    sooo...

Scenario 1: Yea - same team! Who do we pick with the 14th pick in 2013?
Scenario 2: Yea - 17 million to (over)spend on FAs while losing Goran and Lee. I smell another 14 coming...
Scenario 3: Yea - same team minus Sammy which means more PPat and Scola at the 5! Woohoo~!

When can I sign up for season tickets?

It is very relevant in one respect: The cap hold is what counts for cap room purposes) until the free agent is either re-signed (in which case the new salary $ amount counts) or let go (in which case the cap impact becomes $0).

For example, as of July 1, 2012, assuming the Rockets have not make any moves yet other than letting Dalembert go, the Rockets have a total payroll of $49,876,672 for the purpose of calculating cap room, this number includes the cap holds for everyone. Assuming the salary cap is $58.04 million like it was last year (this is a very likely scenario), the Rockets would have roughly $8.16 million in cap room until either Dragic or Lee re-signs or is let go.

This means that they can sign a free agent a $8.16 million starting salary (for example, Kris Humphries). They can then re-sign Lee and Dragic to whatever contract that they want to sign them to, even if these contracts take the total payroll above the $58.04 million cap.

Basically, you have a "window" in which sign a FA while having the cap hold count for cap room purposes.

So, you are saying that the Rockets will have the 14th pick whether or not they bring back Dragic and Lee? In that case we should definitely let their useless asses go.

No I'm saying that the money they save by signing someone else instead of them puts them right back to where we are today.
