Houston Rockets 78
LA Lakers 98

Leading Scorers for the Rockets :

Malick Badiane : 14
Juaquin Hawkins : 12
Jason Miskiri : 12

What a way to kick off the SPL for the Rockets. I've seen better games on an Atari 2600. Many of us knew when we saw the roster that we weren't going to be in for anything special with this squad, and we got exactly that - nothing special. The play was sloppy as is to be expected with most of these summer league games. Many of you watched the game on tv, so I won't get into too many details. Besides, there wasn't much to get into.

There are only 2 people that 99.9% of you care about from these games, so let's start off with those two :

Malick Badiane brings his game to the US...

Malick started the game off a bit awkward and overmatched by umm... Eric Chenowith. Jesus, yes, you heard me right. Chenowith's game was on early as he was hitting everything he threw up. Malick's defense wasn't that bad, but he was outweighed by the people he was usually guarding by about 10-30 lbs it seemed. He's not ready to play post defense if he'll be going up against 250+ pounders in the paint. He's more of a power forward type who was forced to play quite a bit of the 5 in this game. I expected Badiane to have nothing on offense as that's what I kept reading. He does have an offensive game albeit a bit (sorry for the cliche) raw.

He has a competent 15 foot jumper that I saw him pop during warmups and saw him hit a couple of during the game. In other words, he's not a Dikembe when it comes to offense. On defense, he's a pogo stick. I saw him out of position a lot for rebounds and still go after them. Of course a lot of times he was out of position because he was being blocked out by bigger players. He definitely hustles on defense and offense as I saw him go after blocks a few times, come flying in for rebound jam attempts a couple of times, and dive to the floor a few times. I saw him run the floor on a break after a turnover, but miss the dunk because he went too far under the basket (court awareness, Malick!).

Malick has a jump hook that has some serious potential. He shot that shot a few times, and shot it like he knew what he was doing. Badiane also showed a turnaround spin move he apparently has, although he got called for traveling on that particular play. Some Lakers fans next to me who seemed knowledgable about basketball commented they liked what they saw in him. I agree. He seemed to get more comfortable as the game went on and ended up leading the Rockets in points for the game. It's only 1 game, so I'll reserve any further judgment till I see more.

Boki? Where are you?

I was hoping Bostjan Nachbar would ignite in his first SPL game. He didn't. I'm not sure what he ended up with, but he had a tough time getting around Luke Walton's D. Although Boki didn't light up the scoreboard, he did show a lot of positives. He brought the ball up court - or should I say pushed the ball up court a couple of times. He can dribble the ball effectively for his height. I thought on a couple of plays he dribbled the ball too much when he really had no shot or play to make and probably should have passed off. Yes, he Moochied the ball, and ran off too much time. But that's cool - he's young, he'll learn. His shot was slightly off, but the stroke is beautiful to watch. His defense was average at best. There's not much else I noticed about his game.

The not ready for prime time players...

I'd be surprised if Tito Maddox makes the team. But then I was shocked when he made it last year, so what the hell do I know. Janero Pargo was giving Maddox fits in the first quarter. Tito continued with his usual mistakes and turnovers early.

Jason Miskiri actually played pretty well. He has a pretty decent jumpshot and protected the ball better than Tito did, in my opinion. Whether or not he makes the team is another story, but he did stand out among the "who the hell are they" players.

Juaquin Hawkins played really well. As usual, he was a terror on defense and popped a few 16-20 foot jumpers. I really love this guy's game and hope he has a spot on the bench.

Other interesting observations...

During a timeout Patrick Ewing went over to Tito Maddox and talked to him solo. I'm not sure what was said, but Patrick wasn't screaming or yelling, but he sure wasn't smiling leading me to believe it wasn't a "hey, nice to meet ya" conversation.

When the game was really getting out of hand early, the Rockets went to a trapping/pressing defense. It worked a few times. The Lakers were caught off-guard and they turned the ball over. It was fun to watch, and hopefully we'll continue to see more of these type of in-game adjustments during the regular season.

No sign of Eddie Griffin who was to be practicing with the summer league team, but wouldn't play with them.

CD and Van Gundy sat at the game together. The glare off of Van Gundy's head is mind-boggling.

I only took a few pics -- I'll post them later.

you can't hope for anything more than a DoD game summary. We always need more.

My short emphasis to what he said:

Nachbar disappointed. Man, his first drive baseline was just wrong.
Badiane is no Ebi, right now. But how about that 15' er at the elbow.

I'm depressed.

In all fairness, it was their 1st and the lakers 4th game. Maybe next game they will look better. Tito looks clumsy with the ball and i still don'tsee how he beat out Tierre and Oscar last season. Malick is a ball of energy. He is raw, but this guy only knows one speed and thats hard. He pogo's off the floor and like the workout says, he's faster and more agile than alot of guards.. Although he may not be ready this season, I would still like to keep him on the roster to work with the coaches to get better. The quicker he adjust to the nba, the better he is. Wouldn't it be amazing that the future 4 is a 2nd rd pick? It would be really nice to see him go against Eddie in practice. It seems like Eddie has trouble against those intense aggressive type of players. Nachbar was kinda disapponting, but it was the 1st game. Maybe next game we can see a better display of team ball.

Thanks for your reports, I look forward to them every summer. As for Boki I really hope he shows some flashes of his potential during this summer league. I wasnt too excited when he was drafted last year, but I hope he does well. Usually when I dont get excited about a player they dont do to well, so I really hope I'm wrong about Boki.

This is TOO FUNNY :D :D :D I love how "moochie" now has his own verb form. And while on the subject of verbs...

I'll think twice next time I read lines like "and Van Gundy was caught glaring at the <referees> for the poor officiating."

Heypartner, why be depressed? Certainly not on account of Badiane.

Nachbar is a project. He might still become a slightly more mobile Matt Bullard. I think he just has to accept his limitations. In the NBA he will be a role player and will not be able to take over games or drive much to the basket. He should focus on getting open for jump shots on passes from Steve and Yao and Mr. Point guard. Nachbar's future depends on hitting the open jumper.

Sounds like maybe Boki should be the one sent back to Europe next season, not Badiane.

I only lasted for half of the Game. I would describe it as a game between
sharp polished players, strutting their stuff and a team of scrubs that was trying out for a Division 10 non professional team in China. The quality difference between the teams was like a chasm. Considering the huge number of available players attending , that are athletic and can put the ball in the basket, why so many scrubs representing the Rockets?
JVG needs to do a lot of planning and soul searching, before he gets our
team together. Yesteryear is gone and our new Staff needs to raise the bar to a new level. No player deserves a place on the Rockets Roster because of past mistakes at the Draft or in Trading.
Remember this is just a feeling expressed by a Fan who expected to see much more from last nights game!

I only saw about 20 minutes of the game, but what scared me was that Luke Walton seemed to be able to get by Boki whenever he wanted to.

What's Boki going to do against athletic veteran small forwards?

I think maybe everyone needs to take their meds for the day. This is game one of a SUMMER league. It's one step removed from a rec league in a park, which is probably more fun to watch.

Trying to come up with decisions about the future of the team or specific players from their performance in this game is like deciding who will be the future president of the United States out of a class of pre-schoolers.

You may be right but it's still troublesome.

It's a one-way street.

In these summer league games, it's rookies and the scrubs of the scrubs. If you are a legitimate NBA player, you should play at least half way decent.

Excelling in the summer league does not mean you'll be succesful.

However, failing in these games means either 1. You aren't trying or 2. You're trying but you just can't get it done.

Bostjian Nachbar should dominate a second round rookie any day of the week. If he can't, how would he fare against a legitimate NBA player?

And from reports, Nachbar was trying, he just couldn't do it. That's scary .

with all do respect, you said nothing in that post. say sumpin about the game like DoD. Put forth some effort. Some of us are in summer training here. ;)

hey, i'm just kidding.

I'm further depressed by glynch trying to cheer me up with the Bullard comparison and he must "know his limitations." sigh.

Nachbar was no Summer League Langhi in that game. Boy, his defense was atrocious.

Why? Who besides Boki would get any substantial playing time on the "varsity" team anyway? It's meaningless other than Boki trying to earn a sniff of playing time during the regular season. It would be a different story if Yao were there, learning the system as he should be.

If Nachbar cannot outplay Luke Walton, it's scary.

He's supposed to be a contributor next year.

This summer league is all about Nachbar and a glimpse of Badiane. No one else matters.

Nachbar doesn't need to be that good on defense -- the first/second regular-season units can compensate for Nachbar's defense.

Houston's biggest concern this offseason is to bring in a top-notch PG who understands how to distribute the ball. (It took Stojackovich (?) a few seasons to be comfortable in the Sacramento offense.)

Nice! I don't remember them ever doing that last season...hopefully they will play even better defense this season. Too bad we lost by 20 points. But The Bad Man seems pretty good..needs to start strength training and gaining some weight.

Good report! Thanks!

it's not about him not needing to be that good; it's about him needing to not be that bad.

That kind of defense will limit his playing time, just like it did Langhi's Flying Gecko defense. if that's all he's got (flapping arms and squawking), and he doesn't show up with at least Wizard shooting some day...that's scary.

Hey look, I have a picture of Nachbar's defense from last night.
