I'd just like to thank everyone who continued to give updates and who have debated the tragic events that took place today. I've sat at work all day, and not one person I spoke with even mentioned it. They all acted like nothing even happened. I just sat here thinking that if this didn't affect people, what would? It's nice to know that some people give a damn.
I think it is very hard to talk about, but very easy to write your thoughts to people that you really don't know. I think most are shocked and don't really know what to think. I find this board a good place to have good discussions in a less then heated atmosphere. A great catharsis. DaDakota
If you want to do something personally, go give blood. They're airlifting it from Boston to NY at least. No idea if they'll do so from as far away as Houston.
Man, I'd hate to work where you're working. At my workplace, one of the guys went out and bought a small 13" color tv and we set it up in the conference room. We've watched most of the news coverage all day long. Although it's interesting to see people's true colors come out during something like this. There's one guy I work with that just said "we should go there and bomb every one of those turban-wearing camel jockeys". After this he followed up by saying "we need to do some ethnic cleansing". Followed up by, "Man, I think Hitler had a good idea". All the while I was wondering if this guy was an idiot since I kinda look like one of those camel-jockeys. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since yesterday after someone cut him off, he called them a "stupid spic".
DOD, That guy is an idiot, or just lost his cool. I think that is the reason most are quiet about it. They may be worried that they may say something they regret later. DaDakota
Here is another example. I'm currently working in Atlanta for an insurance company. A lady walked into my office and requested I call the main office which was located downtown. I told the woman that the office had been closed for precautionary measures. She got very upset; she couldn't understand why Atlanta would shut down if all of this stuff was happening in NY. She stormed out, and said that they had better be open tommorow. What a joke; some people.
I know what you mean hitman, a lot of people seem to be blowing this off, or thinking "it's not really that bad". As for that woman saying it better be open tomorrow, she better hope IT'S THERE tomorrow. You just never know. On an unrelated topic, hitman21 where did you get your nickname? Is it taken from Bret Hart, or did you just decide to come up with it and use it? Just wondering!
Thankfully, most I saw today did show much concern over what happened in New York and Washington. However, I would like to give a big thank you to those of you on this board... I have not had access to a TV today with the exception of an hour or two, and that was in the early afternoon. In the morning hours, most all of the big news sites like CNN and MSNBC were down, and this was without a doubt my best source for information. Thanks to everyone who kept this BBS updated with the latest news.
Yes, RocksMillenium, Bret Hart was my influence. I wish he was still wrestling. You're exactly right, this was an attack, and if/when we retaliate, who knows? That lady made me sick.
Sweet hitman, Bret Hart has been my favorite wrestler since the mid to late 80s! Glad to see a fellow Hart fan!
That was one comment my Stats teacher made. He said that back after OKC that a lot of arab americans were treated very poorley because everybody assumed all arabs were terrorists and that we should be careful to make sweeping judgements like that. And not to be prejuduce against a whole race as a result of the actions of a few.
I agree hitman. This site has been a good source of information for the plane crashes. Everyone that has shared information, thank you.
I didn't have to worry about nobody giving a damn today because I work for a huge defense contractor, and several people had the radio on and we listened all day to what happened. It was so unreal, it's like several other people said it was like a movie. There are several things that will always stick in my mind from this day: 1) VecseySux's pictures of New York that was on one of the threads 2) Seeing 15 to 20 vehicles at every gas station in town as people worry that we will no longer have gas 3) How blue the sky was with no clouds in sight and no humidity---it was like almost a perfect autumn day..even the temperatures were around 80 maybe lower Also, I just saw Tom Brokaw get corrected by a former UN diplomat named Holbrooke. He didn't like that Brokaw possibly could mislead people that all Muslims were terrorists. Brokaw quickly made several clarifying remarks after talking to Holbrooke that not all Muslims were terrorists and that there were many Muslims (he said many lived in Detroit) that were outraged and condemned what happened today.
