The top mascots in college and professional sports

Trying to come up with the list of the top ten mascots at any level is in the eyes of the beholder. At the college level alone, there are over 1,700 mascots and nicknames from which to select.

But if one person is qualified to provide such lists, it is the man Sports Illustrated called "Mr. Mascot and [the] leading authority on mascotology." Roy Yarbrough has a Ph.D. in sports management studies and teaches at California University of Pennsylvania.

In his book, Mascots: The History of Senior College & University Mascots and Nicknames, Yarbrough answers every mascot question a sports fan could imaginably throw his way. It is a comprehensive history of sports mascots in the U.S.

What is a Wahoo? Or a Hoya? What are the most widely used sports mascot names?

Yarbrough has your answers and a plethora of mascot lore to go along with them. Below are some of Yarbrough's lists of the most recognizable, strangest and most common mascots in American sports.

That is surprising to see Clutch on that list, much less at #5. I guess it helps that he's by far the biggest NBA mascot. It's hard not to notice the guy.

After the top 2, it's a list of pretty nondescript mascots. I guess the sausages got some pub with the whole Randal Simon thing.

um, is there any scientific aspect to that list or did the guy just make it up? any list that doesn't have the Gorillla on it is pretty bad, IMO.

I would think the U of Hawaii Warriors' mascot would make this list.

Not only top 5, but highest NBA mascot. Awesome. Everybody's gotta love Clutch.

I know other teams do air versions of their mascots now, but I gotta think "Air Clutch" was the first.

Last night the "Tundra" Dancers tried to play tug of war with some kids and mini clutch. At first the fat boys were winning but Clutch came to the rescue and helped the tikes out and won!

Hysterical to see those fat boys fall and slide all over the court like beached whales.

I, too, thought that the Phoenix Gorilla would have been on there.

Remember, this list is just most "recognizable" not "best".

    See the USA Today link.
