I just paid 120 bucks to the plumber to "snake" whatever was cloggin my drain. This is the 2nd time in 6 months! A while back I demolished my bathroom and stupidly didnt cover the shower drain the first week! I know some of the mortar and tile fell in there so perhaps it started snagging all the paper and stuff that goes down there? When he was snaking he said he hit something really hard, tried and tried and finally it got through. Everything is fine now, but I'm not sure what it could be besides roots?! He is a master plumber so he knows his stuff, he doesnt think it felt like roots, so I dunno? Anyhow, my house was built in 1930 so it has a slow drainage anyway. My neighbor said his plumber told him to pour hot boiling water and a little soap down the main drain every once in a while. Anyone know of any other rememdies or preventions to stop this from occuring again?!
Nobody wants to know about your sexual deviancies. But, on the serious side of things, if it's just buildup, use the foam from Liquid Plumbr once in awhile. It works.
Go easy on the TP and mix in some fiber in your diet? $120?!?!? Seriously, you can go buy one of those "snakes" at the hardware store and do it yourself for a lot cheaper.
1st of there is a product called rid or something like that, that you pour down the drain that is supposed to help with roots. Second, like Ima said invest in a snake. They are much cheaper than periodic calls to the plumber.
What I do for roots is flush a handful of coarse salt (kosher salt/ice cream machine salt) down both toilets once a month.
ya just buy ur own its really easy to use. i have one and have not had trouble the few times i've use it
Esse- I just dealt with this as well. Roots are, frankly, a b**** on a plumibng system. We had a backup in the house...we called out a plumber and they put a camera down the line and found roots growing in the pipe. Like you, I live in an older house...about 40 years old. Somewhere along the line, someone planted a tree...smaller tree, but with a big base...along the line, right by the cleanout. Roots eventually broke through that old pipe and were catching anything being flushed down. The plumber told me the only thing to do was to remove the pipe in that place and replace it with newer, stronger pipe. Once the pipe breaks with roots in there, there is no amount of Rid that can solve your problem. They did just that. It's not cheap. Just replacing it in that one spot was about $1000...and it costs about $200 for them to snake the camera down to find the problem. Depending on the amount of pipe damaged, it can get a lot more expensive. EDIT: oh, yeah...and i paid to have the tree removed as well. so it won't cause the problem again.
