For Natt, Cavs, summer league was sweeping success

Stepp was the Cavs' best 3-point shooter in the summer league, going 11-for-22 and averaging 10.2 points per game.

Varem, 6-6 and 240 pounds, does not have much range on his jump shot and is not big enough to play either forward position, but his strength and quickness demanded attention. Azubuike, who went undrafted out of Kentucky, averaged 7.5 points and was impressive enough at times to warrant a closer look this fall.

Brown will have some tough decisions to make.

"With all the free agents and rookies that we brought in, it's going to be tough to select a few guys to invite to camp. But from the group of players that we brought in, there will be some candidates," Brown said.

Overall, Brown was pleased with the summer league results.

"The guys played hard and were focused. I'm fired up on what they accomplished. We had nothing but positives from this camp," Brown said.

    Still searching:

The Cavs' quest for a starting point guard now includes free agent Damon Stoudamire. Aaron Goodwin, Stoudamire's agent, said Friday that he and the Cavs have had conversations about his client. Stoudamire averaged 15.8 points and 5.7 rebounds for Portland last season. Stoudamire was seventh in the league in 3-pointers made (181).

    Short jumpers:

Following the hiring of Natt, Brown is expected to fill two more positions on his coaching staff. . . . Akron native Derrick Tarver was 1-for-4 from the field in four games with the Cavs.

To me Stoudamire makes a TON of sense with the Cavs. The Cavs need a GOOD shooter at the PG spot now that they got Hughes at the 2 guard since Hughes shooting is suspect.

It's good if they sign a PG, that should end their free agency and no additional PF). This would be very good for us. And a solid move for Cleveland, but I would be interested in DS if we traded Sura or James, but not so much otherwise. I am OK with BS, MJ and Head for a year or at least to start the season (move before the trade deadline if needed).

The thing with Stoudamire is, I think, that he will go where the money is. He is still too young to do the Barkley thing and go somewhere for the vet minimum just to have a chance at winning a championship. Van Exel might be a different story, though...
