Drayton McLane is attacking the new year's corporate budget for entertainment dollars with zeal. I'm listening to 610, and I am only hearing excitement over the Clemens signing while only negatives are being mentioned about the Rockets. If the Rockets management stays pat with fan indifference being near a high for this team since the Rockets' playoff years, I think those discretionary entertainment dollars will be budgeted mostly for the Texans and Astros with Rockets being a distant 3rd. Trade deadline is early February. There's still time to create some hope for the future.

If it was hard to sell tickets before, it just got harder. It's one thing to have to compete with the Texans. You expect them to sellout. But, to be the only pro team in town that cannot consistently sellout games - even behind the ASTROS - is not good.

It's becoming obvious that the Rockets team is a disaster and it doesn't look to get any better in the future. The Astros and Texans futures are bright and I'm already counting the days untill next season for both.

Man Clemens came out of retirement!! I hate that guy. He's such a headhunter. I hope he fails miserably and ends up with an era above 6 and now that he is in the NL, some pitcher should take a shot at him while he bats, since he was one never to not aim for a guy's head since he never had to bat.

Would this push Les to make a deal?

Does it give any incentive to the Rockets to change at all?

And that will only lead to years of Drayton-esque dollar counting. But if the Rockets are smart, they'll see what McClane finally did to get out of that downward spiral follow suit. To bad two of basketball's best players aren't from Houston. TJ Ford and Rashard Lewis, anyone?

    ;)

I've been thinking the same thing. I think even Rashrd would be good enough. Can't see T.J. Ford and Yao on the same team though, Yao can't play at T.J.'s pace, and T.J. is ineffective at Yao's pace.

I was thinking about this today, the Texans have crazy fan support and looked better this year on the field, the Astros got better infinitely in this off season and have had a big spike in season tix sales, and the Rockets are here slumping like crazy, in a brand new half-empty arena. Next year with the Hornets in our division, do we have ANY reason to think it will get better? This team is going to have to change and get better in a hurry if they want that entertainment dollar. Les has to be looking at his bottom line and not too happy.

The fact the prices are so high does not help at all. Opening day with the Astros is against Barry Bonds and the Giants. Take a guess where the entire city's sports attention will be.

Ticket revenue especially from corporations is a big money maker. Lack of revenue affects roster decisions a whole lot. That trade exception the Rockets got might not get used. Players may get traded purely for financial reasons. Look at the Suns. Their financial situation is widely known. They had to deal.

Well, the Rockets play a national TV game at home against the Kings on the day before (April 4th).

By then, we'll have a good idea of whether or not this team is going to the playoffs.

If they are... they'll get some attention... but seriously, right now they're a distant sixth on Houston's sports map:
    1.) Astros
    2.) Super Bowl XXXVIII
    3.) Texans
4.) Titans (thank god they lost)
5.) MMP's moldy roof that's getting cleaned as I type.
    6.) Rockets

Hopefully things will change for the better come April.

Rockets fans shouldnt get jealous. I dont think this had much to do with Mclane. He got REALLY lucky Pettite and Rocket live in Houston, and both already have rings, so playing for your home town is possible.

We've had our stars also because of our location. Drexler, Barkley, Pippen, Shandan Anderson, Mo, etc. were all willing to play for us cause we are, besides basketball, a good city to live in. I'm sure Les Alexander will find some big star soon who might be willing to come to Houston, maybe even for less money. I am not worried long term.

But short term, this is NOT good for the Rockets. Texans already sellout, and now Astros surely will as well. Now there will be even lesser interest in the Rockets. I hope that if we do make a move, its not out of desperation, and it is about basketball.

well this certainly puts a little more pressure on the rockets to make some noteworthy offseason or mid-season moves.

but.... if the rockets make the playoffs interest could perk up again perhaps.

I remember reading that Jerry Colangelo owns some other team and that factored into his decision to cut costs this year by trading Marbury. We don't fit into this category do we?

    Colangelo owns the Diamondbacks too.

I don't know numbers, but the Rockets never reupped their deal with Foxsports SW. That knocks off some revenue. I can't imagine that Les Alexander was thinking the attendance was going to be so poor this year due to the new arena. Compound that with attendance that will undoubtedly be lower next year since the lure of the new arena is not there anymore and the Astros look better as an alternative, there may be some moves that are financially-motivated.

    It better.

Can we leave Steve on the Wizards' doorstep and take some of their young studs in return? Say, Larry Hughes and Kwame Brown; then flip these guys into Brent Barry and Rashard Lewis?

I mean, Seattle wanted Kwame in the first place. Tried to trade for him in the off-season.

    Hello? Anyone?

    sound of crickets chirping

sticking my head in the well

    HEL-LO?

It looks like the Rockets are going to be the 3rd most popular team in Houston. Look, the Aeros are going to be coming out of nowhere....

If that's the case, then the ONE thing we can't give up is Yao.

I would pursue Francis for Rashard Lewis and Luke Ridnour. Maybe parlay Ridnour + Mobley into Van Exel + the french rookie?

I'm sure having Van Exel and Rashard would improve attendance, plus we'd be a much better team anyway.

I think Yao can be traded and it really wouldn't hurt fan goodwill in Houston that much. 9k in attendance demonstrates that the fans don't care if any players go from Steve to Yao. However, I think the trade package received back for Yao may invigorate the fan base again. Draft Emeka Okafor. Get Rashard Lewis back to town. Get T.J. Ford. Do everything to get all the local guys back to Houston.
