I wanted to start a thread where we could discuss some albums that for us are classics. I would personally like to name the first album which is one I must have listened to zillions of times. The Black Album - metallica I really do think this album qualifies as a classic, one reason being the sheer number of hits on the album. I mean Enter Sandman, Sad but True, The Unforgiven, Wherever I may roam, Nothing Else Matters and The God that Failed. I sometimes feel this album is underrated but it's so well produced and the overall feel of the sound kicks ass. The guitar riffs and overall play from Kirk Hammet rocks and James Hetfields voice really developed a lot from previous albums and Lars Ullrichs drum play is HARD as always. When you think of the crazy life that the band had at the time it's a wonder they were able to record or write at all but somehow they managed to produce what probably is my favorite album from growing up. What do you all think.. Does The Black Album deserve to be labeled as a classic and what do you think of it. Do you have any other albums from other bands that you would characterize as classics.. And as a final note I know that a lot of people seems to prefer the early Metallica based on the fact that they weren't as commercial back then but Damn I still think the Black Album rocks.
I know that people have different taste in music but let's keep it civil I like Metallica yes that's true but don't kill me for it
Well, the key here is "The Black Album" one that is universally considered a classic album or one that stra considers a classic album along with other Metallica fans? I own that album but I have only listened to it like once or twice because I already knew all the songs from MTV. Now, we have some fierce Metallica fans here like DVauthrin and Raven and I know that they will get upset with me for saying this, but the Black Album was not a good thing for Metallica, IMO. It got them out of the underground scene, so to speak, and the albums that came after it seemed to be so generic and formulaic. So, what used to be one of the premier thrash metal bands around had now become just another "nu-metal" band. Now, it is all good if you are in the business of selling albums but it appears that Metallica has not grown as artists if you compare their stuff now to stuff like "Master of Puppets" (the BEST Metallica album) or "Ride the Lightning". However, I preface all this with the disclaimer this is my opinion and something like this, stra, is hard to come up with a definitive answer because it is too subjective. I personally think that "London Calling" by the Clash is one of the greatest albums of all-time, but you might despise it. Doesn't make you wrong for doing that just like it doesn't make me wrong to disagree with you on the Black Album. Anyway, to answer the other part of your question, there are really too many for me but just off the top of my head, I will say these: "OK Computer" - Radiohead "Blonde on Blonde" - Bob Dylan "Dark Side of the Moon" - Pink Floyd "Pet Sounds" - Beach Boys "Nevermind" - Nirvana "Are You Experienced?" - Jimi Hendrix Experience "Siamese Dream" - Smashing Pumpkins "London Calling" - The Clash "Led Zeppelin II" - Led Zeppelin "Mezzanine" - Massive Attack "Disintegration" - The Cure "Murmur" - REM "The Joshua Tree" - U2 "The Queen Is Dead" - The Smiths "Master of Puppets" - Metallica That is about enough but I will also include a little jazz: "Kind of Blue" - Miles Davis "The Ultimate Blue Train" - John Coltrane "Song for my Father" - Horace Silver "Moanin'" - Art Blakey "Maiden Voyage" - Herbie Hancock
Is there ever a time when there isnt some sort of music thread going? Most of you have some very strange musical tastes. I know y'all would hate mine.
I really really like your taste in music Manny!! I own several of those albums and love them!! I agree about Master Of Puppets being really good and it has one thing that the black album does not.. an instrumental song which i always enjoyed. Perhaps it is true that after The Black album came some not as good albums from Metallica but I really like St. Anger and thought that it was a necessary album to get back on track so to speak and I really do not think Metallica is done yet. The Black Album itself I still think is great even though it perhaps started a period which was a little too boring and stylish for many people including myself. But Metallica is the kind of Band I root for just beacause they are regular people who was not supposed to be these big stars. They were never played on the radio but then BOOM comes the Black album and force people to give them attention. I kind of like that. I don't think they sold out I personnaly think they took a step up but then again that's only my opinion. Some music speaks to you on a personnel level and they do that. The only band I really root for is Metallica actually but I have also come to like the music of System of a Down very much rather recently but they will never be as big in my book. I saw Metallica live at Roskilde Festival in 2003 and damn they were back with a vengeance. It was an all out attack starting with Battery and then just continued full speed for hours. Loved It! They played all the good stuff from Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning, And Justice for all and then some St. Anger which surprisingly sounded really well live. But hats off to you Manny for discussing music without trashing.. It can be done after all!
My pistol is loaded, I shot Betty Crocker Deliver Colonel Sanders down to Davy Jones's locker I challenge anybody to find more thought provoking lyrics than that...
Still don't know him Kelly but let me guess... He's from the eightis right The Police... Two words: I agree
It would be nice if people told what they thought made these albums classics.. Why they like it so much..
"August and Everything After" - Counting Crows "The Joshua Tree" - U2 "Automatic for the People" - REM "Achtung Baby" - U2 "Full Moon Fever" - Tom Petty "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" - Red Hot Chili Peppers Albums that aren't on most people's classics list, but that I can listen to over and over and not get tired of or have to skip songs: "Combat Rock" - The Clash (everybody else likes London Calling better) "Document" - REM "War" - U2 "Comfort Eagle" - Cake "Californication" - Chili Peppers (not the same band they once were, but still listenable if you try not to think about the past) "The Seeds of Love" - Tears for Fears "Recovering the Satellites" - Counting Crows and a couple I'm embarrassed to mention as for the Black Album, "Wherever I May Roam" has got to be one of my all-time favorites (and personal theme song), but the rest of it is either: a bit dark/angry for my tastes (I know, that's just the way they are), or just plain lame (Nothing Else Matters - WTF?)
Too many to list: Every Rolling Stones album from 1968-1974 The Who - "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia" Bob Dylan - "Bringing it All Back Home" and "Blonde on Blonde"
I have actually heard a lot about The Who and the Who's next album but have never listened to it myself.. What kind of music is it and what makes it so good in so many peoples minds..
To me, a classic album is one that no tracks get skipped and every time you listen to it, you get something new out of the listening experience. Isabel - great call on "War". I almost said that one but I went with the more safe pick in "The Joshua Tree" but "War" is my personal favorite U2 CD, but I can't deny that "The Joshua Tree" is the greater album. As for "Who's Next", I have that album out right now at my house as I haven't listened to it in awhile. It is just classic rock, stra, like Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Stones, and other bands like that. An album that has several recognizable songs (either from commercials like "Won't Get Fooled Again" or from movies like "Baba O'Reilly") plus strong album tracks, meaning no filler. All this adds up to a classic album. A classic album is also one that is still talked about 10 years or more after it has been released.
