Bill Simmons of espn.com selected the programming this weekend, and two Rockets games made the cut--but they're on in the middle of the night. Get those vcr's and tivos ready. Friday at 2 Am: Rockets vs Spurs, game 2 of the 95 Western Finals. Robinson gets Hakeems MVP award before the game, and Hakeem absolutely destroys him. Enough said. Sunday at 1 am: Celtics vs Rockets, Game 4 of the 86 NBA Finals. Rockets lost, but arguably one of the greatest games ever. full lineup: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/040826
They're not showing that one because it comes on ESPN Classic every once in a while. The gameshe he chose rarely, if ever, come on Classic or NBA TV. I'm most excited about the two rockets games and he Bernard King Christmas Day game.
nice comment about the '86 rockets: (Note: For whatever reason, this underrated Rockets team slipped through the cracks. Everyone forgets that they destroyed a healthy Lakers team that won titles in '85, '87 and '88, no less. At the time, there was even some "We may have to break up Sampson and Olajuwon for the sake of the league" sentiment floating around. Now the entire season is treated as an aberration, mainly because Sampson's career went in the tank one season later. The fact remains, that was the best Celtics team of the decade; they shouldn't be penalized because the Lakers were steamrolled by a superior team that season. For God's sake, Houston won in five. It wasn't an upset.)
if anyone here has NBA TV and can capture the rockets/spurs game please do so for the rest of us who dont get nba tv. stupid dish network gave it to us for free for like half a year and then took it away and its gonna cost us like an extra 20 bucks a month to upgrade to their next package that includes nba tv which isnt worth it cuz we hardly use the channels we do get now, outside of the espn family and comedy central. (and of course tnt when the nba is in full swing)
Has anyone seen the "Kiss of Death" on TV recently? I've been on the lookout but haven't been able to find it on the tube.
I'm gonna Tivo both of them I don't really watch NBA TV much does anyone know if they show the game in its entirety? ESPN Classic does not
No kidding! Thanks for posting that. If Elvin Hayes and the Cougs sparked my interest in basketball, this team sealed the deal. An amazing season and playoff run that was just as the "note" described. I had lower ceilings back then than I do now, and I swear my head almost hit it when Ralph hit The Shot. You can bet that I'll tape both of these. Awesome! (especially the '86 one... I wish they'd show the whole LA/Rocks series)
Im disappointed they aren't showing the Houston v. Seattle Game 7 from '87. The Rockets lost in 6 when Hakeem scored his 49 points w/25 rebounds.
"You could even argue that Robinson's career was never quite the same. And it all started with that speech in Game 2. NBATV needs to show that whole game. With the speech." Simmons wrote this in a previous column also, is the game going to show the speech I hope so! I can't wait!!
Robinson just mentioned all of the great big men who had won the MVPbefore him, but failed to mention Hakeem, who had won the award the year before and should have won it that year. Hakeem allegedly told Kenny Smith "He's holding my award", then went out and humiliated Robinson. Actually, he killed him that entire series, but that game was the highlight.
um... this is probably inappropriate but could someone record the game on nba tv on tonight at 2 am for me?? I'm willing to pay money to see that game. Its the magic vs pacers in the 1995 playoffs. I'm a big fan of Penny!
seriously tho... I don't have nba-tv and neither do my immediate friends. if someone here records that game, I'd pay 10 bucks for it.
codell, a few weeks ago they had a SEA/HOU game on. I thought someone mentioned a 1990 game where Akeem went crazy. Which one was the 56 point game?
Technically the game is on at Saturday 2am, but it's the last game being shown TOMORROW. If you actually look at the schedule it's not confusing.
