Will no one run any of those old Defenses like the Buddy Ryan 4-6 I know we thin at linebacker now but . . . Do you think this defense can work in the modern Era? Rocket River
This is a passing league now so I don't think it could work anymore. They are some teams that run elements of a 4-6 defense I am sure but I don't think anybody will have it as there base defense anytime in the future.
I believe they run a 3-4 base defense but they a lot of teams like the Texans run an 4-6 around the red zone and goal line.
I Agree. I think it is easier on DB because basically 5 seconds the play is over the ball is out of the QB's hands or he is on his *ss forced QBs to make quick decisions The next thing is . . . HIT HARD! I think Pollard is an Ideal Safety for that kind of Defense Rocket River
I was wondering yesterday when DeMeco went down if Pollard couldn't slide into a LB-like role. He's horrible at coverage anyway. Then again, sometimes, as bad as their pass rush is, you wonder if they wouldn't be better suited to just roll with Mario and all LB's and cover guys. Couldn't have made them any worse yesterday.
lulz. You really think running the 46 would be anything else but a disaster? First of all, its an archaic defensive scheme. You can't stack 8 men in the box if your DTs suck as it is. Your LBs will be destroyed on the blitz without a Haloti Ngata or a Kris Jenkins eating up OLs. If the QB has 2 seconds to throw, you're ****ed. Yeah, leave no safety help whatsoever for your rookie corners and let them play bump and run the whole game, that'll work out nicely. Even the 86 Bears couldn't sustain that level of play. Coaching always adapts, which is why the 46 went away a couple years after it was invented. Offensive coordinators figured out ways of implementing the short passing routes and screens that would completely take advantage of an overaggressive unit. Pretty soon the 46 was scrapped and teams eventually progressed to mostly 4-3 units. Rex Ryan runs a hybrid system that is similar to the logistics of the original 46, but mostly in name only. Defensive schemes are insanely more complex then they were back then. The Jets run what looks more like a base 3-4 but when they have the safeties lurk inside, and they have a guy like Darrelle Revis who can blanket a receiver, and safeties who are lethal in run support. No, this isn't correct at all. The 46 does not refer to player alignment like 3-4 and 4-3 does. It is still a 3-4 look, but the strong safety is placed in the box to give more of a 4-4-3 look. "46" was just the jersey number of Bears strong safety Doug Plank, who played more as the "4th Linebacker", like a Bernard Pollard would today.
CB's get even more exposed in a 4-6 defense. Most teams that run components of it have CBs that are pretty good in single coverage.
It is not about the Texans Running it as much as anyone running it. If you have a shutdown Corner. . makes life easier Rocket River
I would be scared to pressure Manning or Brady maybe even Brees with the 4-6, smart QBs would eat you alive in today's game much like Montana did in the 2nd half of the 93/4 playoff game. DAM YOU WILLIE DAVIS!!!
Talk about making our CB's more vulnerable. The 46 only works if you have dominate players, otherwise you'll get exposed badly. When the Oilers got the hang of it they had a line of Fuller, Childress, Williams, and Jones. All capable of getting 10 sacks in a season.
You can make it work, but you have to have a strong rushing DL that can stop the run and pass rush, fast linebackers that can blitz as well (in the 230# range, not 250# size), and your corners have to be top shelf excellent in coverage, and likely the best skilled on the team, and you need a run stopping SS... So far Pollard would be the only piece to fit. Basically , the 46 asks for too much...and as others said, you can't sustain this scheme year after year...
