Houston may change the classification of the streets of the future University Light Rail Line into “Transit Corridor Streets” to use more appropriate street design for a street with light rail transit, according to Metro proposals posted by the City of Houston.
The City of Houston is in the process of its annual update to the City of Houston Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan with a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2:30-5pm at City Hall.

    Date: Thursday, July 18, 2013 (2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
Location: City Hall Annex Building, Council Chambers, Public Level
900 Bagby Street, Houston, Texas, 77002 (map)
The Houston Coalition for Complete Streets [which includes Houston Tomorrow] has been calling for the City of Houston to add more diverse street classifications (pdf) including such streets designed to be more appropriate for major transit investments - to prioritize pedestrian realm over automobile speed. The City of Houston Planning and Development Department and Public Works and Engineering Department suggested changing classification for transit streets in the City of Houston Inner West Loop Mobility Study published earlier this year.
Metro proposes the following benefits to the reclassification of the streets, according to the posted presentation (pdf):
The Transit Corridor Street designation in the MTFP will:
    • Support transit-oriented development to promote mixed land uses and walkability.
    • Link employment hubs and major activity centers increasing mobility and accessibility.
    • Provide an opportunity for the coordination of a multi- modal transportation system.
    • Ensure that ROW needs are identified along the corridor
