City of Heroes I went to Software Etc. yesterday, with the intention of trading in a few old games towards buying MVP Baseball (which I like). When they rang me up I was surprised that my trade in was $9 nore than the cost of MVP. So I decided to put it towards City of Heros. SO the guy grabs this box and sticks it in my bag. Evidently when you pre-order you get a disk that gives you access to the beta. I signed up for it but you have to wait until they let you in. They only add players every so often. I guess the point of this thread is to ask if anyone else is in the beta or if anyone else is planning on getting this MMORPG when it comes out April 29? I have never been into MMORPG but this one has an interesting concept of joining a group and fighting crime in a big city. It has also been hinted at that you can play as villians in a future expansion. So what do you think?
I have zero interest in any of the currently announced mmorpg's. It's all the same gameplay for 9.95 to 12.95 a month.
City of Heroes looks interesting but I think it might be too difficult to pull off. FFXI was the first MMORPG I'd ever tried; it was actually very very good. But I think I'm going to put it away to wait for WORLD OF WARCRAFT.
Ok I figured I'd bring this back up rather than start a new thread. I have been playign this in Beta for about a week and a half. They finally dropped the NDA so I can talk about it. The game is pretty phenomenal. It is much better than I expected. You create a hero using a very thorough creator. That hero chooses an origin and a character class. For my first character I chose Mutation as my origin and Blaster as my class. I then chose 2 power sets, mine where fire storm and fire blast. Basically my guy can shoot differnt fire blasts at people and then create different fire effects that set villians on fire. Gameplay has you going through different missions in order to gain xp and other enhancements. You can gain power enhancements that fit into weapon slots. Those can create a more damaging power or can change the way the power works. With each charater type you go through different missions and even go to different parts of the city. Each level you gain brings more powers and you can add more power sets at certain levels. There is even a set for Flying. One of the major things with the game is that you cannot solo completely through it. ther are some bosses that will require more than one hero to defeat. You can party with up to 7 other heroes and take on missions together. The graphics are pretty nice. There are tons of NPC's running around and villians spawn almost anywhere. As you run through the city (which looks like a major metropolis) you'll see muggers trying to steal purses or drug deals going down. You can stop them or you can keep going and complete your current mission. My only complaint is that sometimes there are too many heroes around and you have trouble finding villians to kill by yourself. THis shouldn't be a problem at launch because currently they are stress testing so ther are only 2 servers up and running. Ther are supposed to be several more at launch which should eliminate these problems If anyone is interested in screnshots let me know. I'll trey to take some the next time I log in and post them to the web.
I've been playing FFXI for a while and have enjoyed it a lot, which server are you on? I read part of a review about City of Heroes and it seemed like a very interesting concept. It's kinda cool to be able to make up your own back story and origin. I'll have to read more later to get more details on it. The review also said it would be 14.99 a month.
I STRONGLY encourage any one here interested in games like this to check out guildwars.com. Its a game that is free to play but has a lot of other great things about it to. Its by the same guys that developed the warcraft, starcraft, and diablo series. They left Blizzard to make there own company and this is the title they started first and has been a few years in the making. It would take too long to explain all the stuff that this game encompasses. Check it out though.
Yep, it's huge. I started mine at 11:00 and it didn't finish until about 4:30 and that is with a pretty fast cable connection.
I pre-ordered the game and it included beta entry but you had to do it before April 7th. Others filled out a form and were chosen. I'm not sure if you can still get in but you may check out www.coh.com . Oski, that has been a major complaint by a lot of people but the answer is that they had problems getting the capes to look right. Getting accurate movement and having it be more than a colored square that sticks off the back of your hero, was apparently going to cause conflict with character modeling. The devs ultimately decided that to get it right they were going to have to spend a lot of time and resources on it, and they couldn't afford that for initial release. That said it is still one of the options for implementing at a later time. So what do you thimk fo the game so far?
The game launches Wednesday and I am still enjoying it. One of the things that has surprised me is that the CoH community has been pretty friendly. It is easy to log in and find a group to play along with. Most players are willing to sidekick someone and you can still have a good time even if you prefer to play solo. They have announced that there will be a Villian expansion coming soon, that will allow players to PvP and play as villians. I actually played with Sam Fisher(I'm pretty sure it wasn't our Sam) tonight. If you are in to such things I recommend it and even if you are not a big time MMORPG player but you always wanted to try one, this might be a good one for you. It is very Noob friendly and so far the community has been pretty easy-going.
"CITY OF VILLAINS" expansion supposed to be shown at E3. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/04/23/news_6094490.html hmm...my interest in this game has been rising of late. Though WOW looms on the (somewhat distant) horizon.
