Just got back from a sneak preview, and it was the best movie I've seen in a long time, has Oscar written all over it. Crowe, Zellweger (as much as I hate her) and Giamatti turn in great performances. Definitely check it out when it opens.
I read an excerpt from the book the other day. Looks like a great story. I will definitely check it out when it opens in theaters.
It looks like Seabiscuit with boxing. Howard and Crowe are a pretty good team so I'll probably check it out.
i wasn't really interested in seeing it based on the previews but i caught some special on it and looks really good. plus crowe is a badass actor and i've enjoyed almost all his stuff since the insider.
As much as I hate to admit it, the cross promotion in Sports Illustrated worked on me. SI ran one of its lengthy features on the man a few weeks ago. I read the whole thing and was taken aback. Now I want to see the movie. I feel like a brainless moron who was duped by a national marketing campaign. I hate that feeling.
Just saw this movie last night. GREAT film. Could easily see another oscar in the works for Crowe. Used to be people argued that Rocky was the best sports movie ever...now I don't even think it is the best boxing movie.
I don't like Crowe, but I will give this movie a shot. He just doesn't come across as an 'athlete' let alone a boxer. When does it premier in Houston?
just got back from seeing it. great acting, pretty good script, but it was kind of linear. but since it's based on a true story i can't really hold that against them.
..just got back from this movie. man, crowe's damn good.. he makes you believe anything he is/does. and i'm not a fan of Zellweger, but she did a great job, too.. that NY accent wasn't too shabby! my friends loved it. thanks for the recommendation, guys!
The movie was good and all, but I really can't stand Hollywood's tendancy to shoot sports scenes with tight shots and quick cuts. The scenes never go beyond the visceral, making it impossible to follow the action with any type of strategic eye. Which is completely opposite to how sports are shown in real life. The default view is almost always from a wide angle, and when they do closeup replays, they do it in slow motion so you can really see what happened.
i never thought about it that way, but you're totally right. very few times were you ever really allowed to see what was going on strategically during the fights.. it was all first person views, flashing light bulbs and swinging cameras.. makes you kind of dizzy..
i saw it last night. one of the best movies i can remember seeing. i'll have to watch rocky again to make it fresh and determine which one is better. i read somewhere they call crowe the chameleon cause of how well he adapts to his parts. he's an amazing actor, truely one of the best in the biz right now. even zellwegger who i can't stand in almost anything was tolerable. i dragged my girlfriend to see it and she was in tears at parts and ended up LOVING it.
Yup, I complained about the exact same thing. This is why I think Million Dollar Baby is a better boxing movie, because it's just shot better in the ring. But I still loved Cinderella Man. It's more of a story about the Great Depression than a boxing movie to me, and that made it very interesting. Ron Howard milked some amazingly subtle yet strong performances out of Crowe and Zelwiger. Though I don't think the story is tight enough for a Best Picture nod (the story about the boxer's friend seemed out of place, and was probably a composite character), it might get some Oscar buzz.
