From Tom Dienhart's(Rivals.com) twitter... TomDienhart Cincinnati has asked for permission to talk to Houston coach Kevin Sumlin.
Apparently there's a reporter in Kansas that has been contacting Sumlin's recruits looking for a possible lead about his level of interest in the KU job. (which is zero)
Cincinnati is not a good job long-term. For a BCS school, the facilities are not good. The Big East is the worse BCS conference. I think if he waits till next year, he could get an job in either the Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, or SEC. If Purdue has another bad season, that job could be open. The same thing with Michigan, Arizona State, Washington State, or Minnesota.
CASH, MONEY, DOUGH if Cincy gives it, Sumlin leaves for it. I hate that U of H is a stepping stone, but right now thats they way it goes. I would love for him to stay, but green paper talks louder that school colors.
Cinci will not offer Sumlin significantly more money than UH will. Although I said that about Baylor, and look what happened. I guess the lesson here is, never underestimate the stupidity of Baylor.
i think its going to be interesting to see how UC plays this out. if they're serious about keeping their football program in decent shape, they'll throw money at a coach. SW ohio is crazy about football, theres tons of high school talent right in cincy as well. i heard the other day some ESPN talking head say UC is a basketball school, it is, and was for the longest time when huggins was there. but if the football program can sustain some type of success, football could easily overtake basketball.
Cincinnati is also a stepping stone. Their last two head coaches left for Michigan State and Notre Dame. I have no doubt Sumlin would leave for the right opportunity but I don't think Cincinnati is that job. If or when Sumlin leaves, I have no doubt Dana Holgorsen would do a great job.
Here's an article from when Kelly signed his last contract with Cinci. Some LOL worthy quotes in there as well as facilities promises that never came true. http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2008/01/28/daily23.html
If that is the case, I would go after Turner Gill if he doesn't get the Kansas job. One guy I think is going be hell of head coach is Morgan Scalley who is the current Utah Safeties coach and Recruiting Coordinator. He recruits Houston real well for Utah. He has some of the best local kids commited to Utah. College football is all about recruiting.
